This book brought back many memories for. As a bloke born in Scotland Road in the 1930s ( 1929 to be exact) I was brought up in great poverty and the usual working-class struggle for survival. Liverpool has a great history of working-class stories. This book gives some of those stories.

Mind you, the picture on the fronts-piece of the book shows children who look to be well-fed and well-dressed, so these are obviously post-war 2 children.

I recommend this book to anybody, Scouser or not, as it a very good read

I came from "The Pool", but my knowledge of the city's fascinating history was very limited. This book brought my attention to many of the factors which served to shape the city's social milieu. This book is packed full of interviews with local, mostly older working-class people, giving their unedited perspectives on life in the city. I grew up in the outskirts of the city during the 80s and 90s, and by this time the of the city's former character had long since begun to lose touch with its routs; as well as for outsiders interested in the city's social history, the book is a great opportunity for insiders to acquaint themselves with the context in which they were created. This book contains plenty of interesting facts, but it's strength comes from the way in which it unpretentiously constructs an intimate picture of how Liverpool developed its distinctive "Scouse" character.

I bought this book for my Dad and he loves it. He grew up in Liverpool in the 1940's so he can relate to a lot of the places and times mentioned in the book
