Ringo returns home. 8 Jan 2008
By Quiverbow TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Ringo's first single for a long time is his 'Penny Lane' and 'In My Life', though not anywhere near those two songs in its writing. With a nod to the other three, Rory Storm, Shea Stadium and a couple of his boyhood homes, one can imagine this being an in-concert favourite particularly when performed in his home town. Ringo will be the first to admit he's no Lennon, McCartney or even Harrison in the vocal stakes but this is a decent effort on his part. The simple lyrics make for easy listening and when the guitars and percussion enter it's quite catchy. The "Liverpool, Liverpool" chant at the end does give a suggestion that Mr. Starr wasn't quite sure how to finish the song.

With probable healthy sales on Merseyside, don't be surprised to see this making a showing in the lower reaches of the charts, something he hasn't managed in a good many years. My only gripe is that this CD single is exactly that: a single song.

It's frustrating seeing Ringo getting a metaphorical kicking from the press and public for being talentless - for the record, Ringo was an inspired drummer, perfect for the Beatles. As a character he embodied the Beatles' soul and humour, and it's still great seeing him interviewed when he's on form.

However, I don't think he's made an album that I could really enjoy on it's own merits since the EXCELLENT Time Takes Time from 1992 or thereabouts. This was produced and co-written with members of the psychedelic, Beatley band Jellyfish.

Liverool 8 - sorry Dave Stewart, sorry Ringo - is a lame affair. Paul once said that 'you can't reheat an old souffle', referring to a Beatles' reunion. Well it sounds like they've tried here!

It might have sounded less arrogant a lyric too if the chorus had been 'Liverpool - YOU never left me, rather than I never left you. Because you did Ringo - you even lived in the south of France for a few years!!

Maybe I'm missing the point, and should just be grateful that Ringo is still bothering to release records at all - he is nearly 70 in a few years time! I guess I just have high expectations and would love to see him doing something a bit more contemporary, with some interesting younger artists - even a modern reprise of his 1970 Country album Beaucoups of Blues, which is a genre his voice suits - can you imagine it with Robert Plant/ Alison Krauss type production.

Advice Ringo - quit the nostalgia seam, it's been overmined, particularly by you. You'll be getting nostalgic about when you were nostalgic if you're not careful!!

Lastly, at the time of writing, why is this single more expensive than the album?!

Perfect Storm 12 Jan 2008
Format:Audio CD
I'm giving 5 stars as it is great that Rory Storm is given credit at last. I know that he probably died a broken man after he used to be the No. 1 band in Liverpool, but never made the big time. Good on you to remember Rory, Ringo and refer to him as your friend. Overall, if you love Ringo and Liverpool you'll like this song.
