Product Description

The gossips of a tranquil village on the outskirts of Malminster have a field day spreading the news that Helen Goddard's husband has been seduced by the local femme fatale, Marion Walsh.
Then Marion's charwoman is poisoned by milk obviously intended for her employer, and suspicion naturally falls on Helen Goddard until Marion herself is brutally murdered and Chief Inspector Morrissey discovers that a lot of people wanted her dead.
And then there are the missing children, too...
As Morrissey digs deeper he begins to untangle a hideous web of perversion, envy and murder - and skeletons start to tumble out of some very influential cupboards indeed…

'[A] well-plotted, tersely scripted first novel' Publishers Weekly
'Lots of local colour and colourful characters, a closed circle of suspects… the formula is an old one, but this story shows how much potential the formula still has.' F.E.Pardoe
''...an intriguing little thriller … Kay Mitchell builds a neatly joined web of crime that distributes clues and red herrings in an appealing way.' Romford Post
'A thoughtful piece of detective writing' The Lady

Enjoyable whodunnit 31 Aug 2011
By P. Stephens TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I didn't think I'd like this at first (too Midsomer Murders-twee) but in fact it turned out to be an enjoyable whodunnit which is less gritty than some (no actual descriptions of sex or violence) but deals in the aftermaths of violent crimes in a grown-up way. The setup is classic - the village gossip has been murdered but it looks like the real target was the local femme fatale with a string of married lovers, generating lots of potential suspects - but it's used well, and there are humanising touches such as the ambivalent relationship between DCI Morrissey and his sergeant, the able but cocky Neil Barrett, and Morrissey's concern that his feelings of attraction for the obvious suspect may be clouding his judgement.

It's a fairly short book (under 5,000 Kindle locations), and zips along at a nice pace. It's well-written, and has a credible ending which develops naturally from the preceding story, something you don't always get in crime novels. If you want a straightforward British crime story and would rather not witness the actual slaughter, this is a good bet.

A really good plot and good to find another decent detective story. However, the typing errors and poor spelling really detracted from the enjoyment. I will try other titles by this author but if the presentation is the same, I will soon stop. Surely someone dealing with these publications should be literate. The 3 stars refer purely to this lack of professionalism, it is unfair on the author and the reader to have such basic errors,

Enjoyable crime novel 16 Oct 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
An enjoyable crime novel and a good start to what promises to be a decent series. The two detectives are well drawn and there is enough happening in the story to make it move along quickly. I didn't guess whodunit until about halfway through, which is not bad going as I read a lot of crime fiction.

One criticism I have, though; there are a lot of typos, of the kind which make me think this book was scanned by OCR software. These need to be sorted out as they distract from the novel and this is why I have deducted a star.

But overall, a good read.

Where was the proofreader?
I enjoyed the book despite all the scanning errors. If I were Kay Mitchell, I'd be livid at the number of OCR errors that nobody bothered to check.

Good old fashioned stuff with a twist
I enjoyed this rather old fashioned detective story. It seems to start very much in Midsomer Murders territory. Read more

Typos and silly errors spoil a good read.
I have to agree with Crimefan's review. A very good story, well told, and would have been thoroughly enjoyable, apart from the annoying typesetting errors. Read more

poor formatting spoils a good read
I've given this two stars because the poor formatting and numerous spelling mistakes interrupt the flow of a good story. Read more
