Product Description

Synopsis

A poignant fable of love and loss; a whimsical tale of a cat with more than nine lives; a beautifully poetic Buddhist allegory of birth, death, rebirth, and emancipation-this strikingly illustrated book invites all of these readings. In language both simple and profound, it tells the story of an arrogant cat who keeps being reborn to owners he dislikes until he discovers freedom, and then love. This book was intended for children to enjoy but its complex, moving themes make it even more appropriate for adults. Published in 1977, The Cat That Lived a Million Times is in its 56th printing in Japan. It appears now in English for the first time.

5.0 out of 5 stars heartbreakingly lovely 12 Jun 2001
By Martin Kubaczek - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
The remark by Horn Books (above) says the book will not gain many readers in the U.S. - if this were true, it would be a pity and a missed chance to understand and look at the fact of life that is probably the most difficult we have to deal with - passion and loss, love and death. This book, which I know only in Japanese, is lovely and extraordinary. Its story is heartbreaking and it probably will make you cry. But these tears will leave you with a deep, clear new feeling of how precious life is - yours and everyone elses.
5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, moving book 4 Jun 2011

i (67-year-old man) cried when I read this. My wife (same age range) cried when she read it. We were going to give this to one of her grandchildren, but we felt it was just to heavy for a child. That said, it is a really sweet, wonderful story.
Please read Martin Kubaczek's (Vienna, Austria, EU) review; he said what I would have said.
5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for adults and children alike 29 Aug 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
What a treasure! This book is familiar to most Japanese people, and it's easy to see why. The creative, simple, even playful flow beckons to the child within all of us. The book really expresses the unique way the Japanese tend to value the quality of being "childlike", and shouts to all of us, "don't take things so seriously!" The simple way the story deals with happiness, love, and death make this a perfect book for an adult to read together with a child. Finally, the excellent translation captures the simplicity and playfulness of the original Japanese version almost perfectly.
