Album Description

MAN'S DEBUT LIVE ALBUM FOR LIBERTY / UA - NOW REMIXED FROM THE ORIGINAL 8-TRACK TAPES & EXPANDED TO INCLUDE THE ENTIRE CONCERT

MAN's importance in the history of Welsh rock music cannot be understated. Fusing the worlds of psychedelia, blues, rock and roll and West Coast inspired rock, they were simply one of Britain's most original groups of the 1970's. Recording a series of Classic albums for Liberty / United Artists, MAN, along with label-mates HAWKWIND, were true champions of the "underground" spirit. Esoteric Recordings are proud to undertake the reissuing of MAN's entire legacy for United Artists continuing with their first live album for the label released in September 1972. This expanded reissue features the entire concert over two CDs at a special price and liner notes exclusively penned by MAN guitarist and raconteur DEKE LEONARD. The time is right to re-experience the musical ages of MAN!

Recording of a Man concert that took place on April 8, 1972. Sound quality is quite good with sort of a raw edge to it. Turns out this is an expanded 2-CD reissue of that evening's entire set. Previously 'Padget Rooms' was put out as a single disc CD reissue. Now, Esoteric adds on three more bonus track, thus making it a double disc pressing. Starts off with the twenty-three minute Man jamming classic "Spunk Rock", it sounds just so '70's-ish. "Many Are Called, But Few Get Up" has a rather good vibe to it and "Angel Easy" brings the band right back at what they do second best - playing fine blues rock. The first, of course is playing superb British psychedelic rock and roll. Then on disc two, "H. Samuel" is another epic - clocking in at nineteen minutes, the later half of this song could possibly provide a good soundtrack to a suspense movie. "Romain" brings to mind some of that old school southern fried rock and "Daughter In The Fireplace" is another one of Man's steady rockers, that sound even better when performed in front of a live audience. Enjoy this expanded 2-CD reissue like it was meant to be. Recommended.

I Wish I'd Been There 19 Dec 2009

I bought the original 'low price, limited edition' album when it was first released when I was in my early teens and was completely freaked out (a 70s version of 'blown away') by it. It was, and still is in my opinion, one of the best 4 or 5 live albums of the 70s, despite 'H.Samuel Jam' being a little aimless and uninspiring. 'Many are Called..' and 'Daughter of the Fireplace' are classic versions of virtually unknown classic songs of their generation (outside of the select few who knew of the band). I first heard Man after buying a UA sampler called 'All Good Clean Fun' which featured the studio version of 'Daughter of the Fireplace', I then went on to buy all of their albums up to and including 'Do You Like It Here...'. The live versions of 'Many are Called..' and 'Daughter...' have to be heard to be believed, the improvised guitar driven intro's are inspired. This CD features additional songs from the gig which must have been difficult for the band/label to sit on all of these years. I still think whoever chose to include 'H.Samuel Jam' on the original album rather than 'Romain', 'Angel Easy' or 'Spunk Rock' (and yes I know there was a version released as part of the 'Greasy Truckers' album) must have been on acid or summat......Still sounds brill...

When I was at school (aeons ago) my mate Mike and I were Man fans. Mike had this well-recorded 3 song live bash on vinyl, in a funny little thin paper cover as I remember it. I heard it many times round at Mike's house, and made a mental note to acquire my own copy once pocket-money allowed. Sadly, by the time pocket-money allowed, the album had long since sold out, never to be made available again. Until now. For less pocket-money than I spend daily on a sandwich, a paper and some juice at lunchtime, this amazing artifact is once again obtainable. Deep joy. Take my advice; if pocket-money allows, grab a copy NOW. I had to wait 30-odd years, so get it while you've got the chance.
