I was very impressed when I first heard Little Jenny and the Blue Beans on Paul Jones radio show, excellent Chicago blues from the Swedish all-woman band and really good vocals, guitar and blues harp from Jenny herself. And now I've just learned that sadly Jenny died before Christmas after losing a battle with cancer - seems like only the other week that they played a great show at the Gloucester blues festival in 2008.
However, this record is a fitting memorial, extended live versions of some of the tracks from her solo CD `Coming home'. The sound is excellent throughout, semi-acoustic and relaxed, very reminiscent of Eric Bibb's first two CDs recorded in Sweden. There are also echoes of Tom Waits in songs like "The party is over". Jenny's vocal's and particularly her harp playing are excellent throughout - despite the fact that she was already ill and had to get out of her sick bed to play this gig. My favourite track is probably `Coming home' with its great harp and nice slide guitar from Thomas Almqvist - although all the musicians provide very professional, sympathetic backing. An excellent record, what a pity that Jenny won't be making any more.
