It seems extraordinary that a Chris Whitley live album has taken this long to happen. His four studio albums, to most intents and purposes, have been live-in-the-studio affairs anyway, Whitley armed only with his weirdly-tuned guitars and the boot heel he keeps time with. He also seems to have spent his entire life on tour, apparently happy to play to any amount of people in pretty much anything with a roof. At Martyrs was recorded over three nights in Chicago in the summer of 1999. Anyone who has attended one of Whitley's live performances will find it faithful to their memories--Whitley's vocals and guitars operate at such odds to the usual notions of rock & roll that if often sounds like he's making the songs up as he goes (in this sense, if in few others, he is often reminiscent of both Tim and Jeff Buckley). Otherwise, he is heir to a feral strain of American country being pursued seriously by nobody else other than 16 Horsepower, and At Martyrs is a mighty tribute to what he is capable of. --Andrew Mueller
