Biography by Richie Unterberger & Sean Westergaard
In his brief four-year reign as a superstar, Jimi Hendrix expanded the vocabulary of the electric rock guitar more than anyone before or since. Hendrix was a master at coaxing all manner of unforeseen sonics from his instrument, often with innovative amplification experiments that produced astral-quality feedback and roaring distortion. ... 4.0 out of 5 stars A fine performance 15 Nov 2005
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Other reviews give a track by track listing, so there’s no point in repeating that. I’ll just emphasise a few points that a Hendrix fan might want to be clear on before deciding whether or not to buy this double CD.
The first thing to note about this release is that the contents of this double CD differ from the tracks previously released on ‘Band Of Gypsys’ – I had thought is was just an extended compilation of tracks from the four shows on 31.12.69 and 01.01.70 but the track listing and enclosed booklet point out this important detail. Even if you have ‘BOG’, it is still very worthwhile getting this set for the different performances if you are a keen Hendrix fan. Secondly, given the dates of these shows, I have to commend the sound quality as it is excellent – a real treat for the ears.
One of the marvellous things about collecting Hendrix’s recordings is that you will very rarely, if ever, find two exactly similar performances of the same song. For example, the opening track ‘Stone Free’ runs for 12:56 and includes some wonderful guitar work with additional vocal elements that work extremely well. There are many good tracks in this set, although there are one or two places that lean too far towards soul music for my taste – not my choice, but you might like it. Overall though, this is an impressive set of recordings and fits well in a Hendrix collection with generally excellent guitar work and the band seemingly enjoying themselves. I still prefer the original ‘Experience’ line-up as I felt they added more than just musical ability to a performance.

3.0 out of 5 stars A double album of two halves.... 1 Jun 2007
Format:Audio CD
There's a GOOD side to this album, and there's a BAD side.

Quite simply, at its best, Hendrix's lead playing on this album is unquestionably better than the best to be heard on any other live Hendrix release. Better than the best on Woodstock, Winterland, Isle Of Wight, Stages...take your pick.

Now, if you own the out of print 'Concerts' CD you'll know exactly how phenomenal Hendrix's improvisational playing is on the extended version of Stone Free from the Royal Albert Hall. With Stone Free on the Fillmore album, Hendrix completely wipes the floor with that performance. That's no exaggeration. And there are 4 or 5 other tracks on the Fillmore CD similarly extended in the same outstanding manner.

I keep reading reviews on Amazon.com about how Buddy Miles put the funk back into Hendrix's live sound. I have never understood that train of thought, because his playing style on this album is as repetitively pounding as a cement mixer. There's no funk to his sound whatsoever, it's just bang-bang-bang-bang all the way through the songs. If drum machines had been commonplace in 1969 there would have been no need for Miles to have been onstage with Hendrix, Jimi could have just switched the machine to a basic setting and left it be.

To return to Stone Free as an example, Mitch Mitchell always held a funky groove with that track, gave some space to the sound when required, and played both in and around Hendrix. In the hands of Buddy Miles all of that interplay is completely lost. He smacks at the skins as if he's keeping the beat for a marathon.

If you can ignore Miles' rather bland and uninspiring drumming, half of this album is very good...

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Hendrix 18 Jan 2008
Format:Audio CD
Band of Gypsys has always been my favourite Hendrix album, and this expanded set from the same performances at the Filmore is even better. The sound quality is spot on and the rhythm section of Buddy Miles and Billy Cox keep Hendrix grounded and yet give him more space in a way that The Experience never did. Stunning, beautiful, powerful. One of the finest live performances ever recorded.

Excellent album. Jimi Hendrix never dates. What's more this live performance has got to be the best ever. Why did it take me so long to get it?
