Like many that have written reviews, I also possess the original FM broadcast bootleg from the concert and, like many, I was disappointed at the removal of much of DC's crowd banter and general rabble rousing, which most WS fans already realise is very much part of the appeal of the band live. The actual sound of the CDs is better, obviously, than the bootleg, but, like the broadcast and concert, has far too much Steve Vai solo spot/showing off. It wasn't, really, the best time on WS history in terms of the band gelling, with Vai being given far too much prominence to the exclusion of the equally talented but more restrained Vandenberg, but it does mark their commercial height.
The DVD, sadly, is almost completely lacking. Like many bootleg concert DVDs, this was never meant to be released commercially and the footage is just what was shot for the large video screens on the day, so there are very few long shots or crowd shots at all. It makes it a very two dimensional concert and not a little flat. The director's choice of focusing on DC or Tommy while half the guitar solos are ongoing, and then on the wrong guitar player, is also rather bizarre and very irritating. The camera work is rather flaky, often wobbly and too often features constant focus adjustments as well. It's not terrible, but I was hoping for so much more.
What saves this release, and should stop you buying just the CD version, is the extra 20 minute "Behind The Scenes" documentary. It's truly wonderful. Filmed mainly during pre-production for the album, you'll get to actually hear how many songs would have sounded with Adrian playing, instead of Vai. There are are also a few lost songs and outtakes being played, including Vandenberg's own Burning Heart with DC singing. Best of all is DC actually playing blues guitar, and bloody well! The commentary is all DC's own as well and the hand held video camera footage suits the relaxed vibe of the band, most of it without Vai, who seemed to have very little input into the actual preparations, happy to come along at the alast minute, push out Vandenberg from his well earned spot (depsite Vai having no song writing input at all) and then acting like a complete prima donna. I really have no time for that show off. That 20 minutes really makes the DVD worth having for fans. As for the concert, stick to the more recent live releases...
