I've had this performance on tape for sometime now and its always been something of a guilty pleasure. I'm not sure this Klondike release absolves me of that guilt but it is very welcome nonetheless. Whilst Stills solo recording career became rather patchy after the 1975 Columbia release 'Stills', this live performance is testimony to the fact that he was still, in the late 70's, a very compelling and gifted solo artist.

Firstly, to my ears, this recording is an upgrade on the quality of other versions that have circulated. Not perfect by any means, but still highly listenable and just the right amount of audience to give it the excitement and vitality of a live recording. Stills' voice is in great shape too and the mix serves it well - I much prefer him singing in an acoustic setting rather than trying to belt it out on an electric number.

Secondly, the set is a fantastic mix of songs showing the breadth of his range. All the songs are a good fit for the stripped down vocal and acoustic guitar/piano (with some harmonica courtesy of John Sebastian and fiddle from an unidentified fiddler) Along with his own material, there are good romps through 'Not Fade Away' (better here than on Thoroughfare Gap), 'Take Me Back To Ohio Valley' and the 'Crossroads/You Can't Catch Me' medley which gives the 'Stills Live' official release a run for its money (despite some faux blues voicing which creeps into a number of the songs - be warned). We also get to hear the very earliest version of what became a Stills classic 'Spanish Suite' from 'Man Alive' - here titled 'One Moment At A Time'. That song, and Stills take on 'Ole Man Trouble' - again not recorded or released until 2005, give a fascinating insight into how songs can evolve yet stay in the cupboard for decades.

This album is not an official release, nor is it of the best sound quality (although very listenable unlike some of these radio performance releases about); however the music contained within is exceptional and in terms of live performance is certainly the best live Stills album (official or otherwise) that I have heard, and may even challenge the recent CSNY 1974 release in terms of “critical to own”, and I by no means suggest any criticism of that set. This performance is that good!

This is a recording (from a radio broadcast) of a show in 1978, and highlights an exceptionally relaxed but extremely tight performance from Stills with a combination of his own songs and those of others. Mostly acoustic, with minimal accompaniment throughout, there are too many great, and even rare song performances for fans of Stills to miss.

Stunning!!

Bread & Roses Festival is a live recordeing of Stephen Stills recorded on the 4th September 1978 at the U.C. Berkeley's Greek Theater .Berkeley California USA.

The concert festival was organised by Mimi Fariña.
Stephen was actually a last minute act at the Bread & Roses Folk Festival.
He performed alongside Hoyt Axton.
The festival was a magnet for any liberal minded music act back then.

BUT Amazon have not, at the time of writing given us the track listing.
This is important because only two tracks from his, then, new album 'Thoroughfare Gap'.
The rest were old Crosby, Stills and Nash numbers.
If you want to know more about the sound quality and other stuff then may I recommend you read the other excellent reviews on Amazon?
The sleeve notes are quite good too.

If you are cutting and pasting please ignore the last track.
Stephen Stills was (and still is) a passionate champion of liberal causes and was a highpoint for any discerning artist with such political persuasion.
Held at from September 2-4 1978, Stephen Stills was actually a last-minute addition to the bill, performing.
Klondike's retrospective release of this seminal appearance by Stephen Stills authorizes a valuable snapshot in his career as a sincere and passionate performing artist.
His surprise guest appearance in September 1978 is now recognized as a highpoint in his live work and is presented here in its entirety.
Digitally remastered. Includes background liner notes.

Stills has always been a mixture for me some very good and some very average,
this moves between those extremes, his guitar playing is always interesting but his
voice can seem very strained at times however this is worth a listen if you are a strong Stills fan.

Fantastic live set. This may be a quasi-bootleg,official in europe, and dodgy elsewhere but it still remains a fabulous recording. This is a fantasic StephenStills live recording, far better than the official 1975 live release. His guitar playing is brilliant and his vocals are the best i have heard in any live recording of him,be it official or bootleg.Klondike have done all Stills fans a great service in releasing this concert. It is a recording that deserves to be heard over and over again. This is Stills at his concert best.
