This is the CD that really brought the poetry and power of Bert Jansch home to me. I had a number old vinyl Bert Jansch LP's (remember those!) but they were clouded with strings and other musicians that, for me and at the time, distracted from the musicianship of the the songwriter. Although "Live @ the 12 bar" was recorded in a small and smokey club in London's Denmark Street it suggests lightness and space, and exudes a freshness and vitality. Bert's live version of Jackson C Frank's " Blues runs the game" is one of the high spots of the session, a superbly delicate yet compeling performance of another songwriter's material. " Blackwaterside" is a marvel of creativity and guitar ingenuity, providing a tension that rivals his original from "Jack Orion". Overall this is a CD that will startle you with it's power and subtlety - one man, one acoustic guitar and a bunch of tremendous songs ... Bert Jansch live and extremely well. I think that this is a great introduction to one of the most influential singer/songwriters of his time - if you haven't got a Bert Jansch CD get this one and be prepared to to make space for more.
