5.0 out of 5 stars One of the very best 29 Mar 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
There aren't many records that make me laugh out loud, or cry real tears. I Wrote this Wee Song does both, by turns, pretty much all the way through. Eric Bogle is truly brilliant. To the picks of the reviewers below, I'd like to add my vote for Singing the Spirit Home and Mirrors on the serious side, and Plastic Paddy and Short White Blues for comic relief. And between the songs Eric's patter raises a few laughs and makes the whole thing feel very real and from the heart. Get this record, really.

5.0 out of 5 stars a superb, moving collection of eric bogle's work 17 Aug 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
There's not a lot I can add to the review already , but having heard Eric at Crail Folk Club and previously in Edinburgh I can only say that he ranks in my humble opinion as one of the all time greats. The first reviewer of this album commented that everybody knows an Eric Bogle song - interestingly this includes Tony Blair, British PM, though as the reviewer comments sadly not as many people know that songs such as No Mans Land are by Eric. He deserves much more credit, but I'm sure he'd be the first to deflate pompous politicians . My children could sing Eric's Silly Slang song before they understood the nature of his comments, but it's an immensely funny song.
One of my favourites on this album is "A Reason for it all" beautifully recorded with John Munroe's evocative counterpoint harmony. As a social worker working with the elderly the comments bite home in a powerful way as an indictment of our modern society.
Keep up the great songs Eric ! Its also nice to know that Eric will still tour local folk clubs unlike some artists who go for large venues once they've had a couple of hits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reality check for the world......... 7 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Eric Bogle is an enigma.....that one man from Scotland should grow to be one of the world's foremost songwriters is nothing short of extraordinary. From a humble origin in Scotland, via his beloved Australia, Eric touches the hearts and funny elbows in this world class colection. No Mans Land (or Green Field of France as most know it) is the ultimate anti war song, whilst with every word of "Now I'm easy" the listener lives and dies with the Australian "cocky". Similarly, "leaving Nancy" details the very real pain of the emigrant, saying tearful farewells to his mother....powerful stuff, and perhaps the only absence in this album is "Waltzing Matilda", the second best anti war song ever written. Eric Bogle is unique, a man who seeks not the fame, but loves his songs as his own.............everyone in the world knows an Eric Bogle song, that they don't know Eric Bogle wrote them is perhaps the biggest tragedy of the last thirty years of popular music. You don't have to buy this album, god alone knows that few enough of you will ever read this review....so you don't have to buy this album, but your life is less complete for not having it. A world class compilation by a world class artist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! Order It Today! 17 Dec 2001
By Carole A. Javaux - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is a two CD set, EVERY song on it is my favorite! It's recorded at a live concert, and anyone who's ever attended a live Eric concert knows besides being a great singer and the best songwriter who ever lived, he's also the best storyteller there is. You get to hear him laugh, chuckle, crack himself up, you hear the clever repartee between Eric and his bandmates, it's almost like being at the concert, you get the full Eric experience. The man is a genius and a poet. This CD takes you on a roller coaster ride through every possible human emotion, there are songs to make you laugh and songs to make you cry, but as always, Eric leaves his fans on a high note. This is music that truly speaks to your soul. I bought three for myself, one for home, car and work and copies for everyone I know. Order it today, like each and every Eric CD, this one is a keeper.
