the john coltrane quartet live in 1961- captured with his defining quartet here playing timeless music that both amazes with passion,+ energy but with deep spirituality in incredibly tight renditions of established Coltrane tunes+ explorations. extraordinary yet still approachable jazz. stand-out tracks for me include an incredibly intense yet catchy "impressions" also featuring eric dolphy, and stunning renditions of the drone influenced "india" and yes personal favourite slow ballad- "spiritual". the recording also is a marvel also for its age. completely lifelike + captures the incredible synergy of all musicians live and at full impact: coltrane, jones, garrison, mccoy tyner + dolphy lock into tightly performed renditions of arguably Coltrane's best phase (1961-1965) of his illustrious carrer + before he abandoned formal ensemble structures for the free New Thing in his final few years.
the packaging on this gatefold Impulse cd with several atmospheric photos + excellent booklet notes make "Live at the Village Vanguard" indispensible for all fans of prime time Coltrane + cohorts at the peak of his powers.
when it comes to Coltrane from this period - believe the hype. essential music not just jazz.
