This 2 disc set is the official live recording of the gig Purple did at the Paris Olympia in June 1996. I saw them on this very tour at the Glasgow Barrowlands back in March '96 and it was a memorable show (Morse's first UK Tour with them). Anyway back to the Paris show, from start to finish this is a blistering set, proving Steve Morse was more than a capable replacement for the legendary guitarist Ritchie Blackmore (who exited stage left in '93). They open with a storming rendition of Fireball and also give a few other old chesnuts a rare airing (like May'be I'm a Leo and No One Came). There is also quite a few tracks played from then new album Purpendicular (Morse's studio debut with them). Both Morse and Lord of The Hammond, Jon Lord in particular shine and the whole band is sounding like a tight unit here.

I accept Morse is not everyone's cuppa but he more than proves himself here and injected some new life into the band (and made them smile again!)

What comes across most from this show is the big power and musicianship of Deep Purple on stage (something i've always associated them with). If your looking for a good document of this lineup (Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Ian Paice, Jon Lord and Steve Morse) live then this is a great place to start.

Highly recommended.
David Cook (Hurlford, Ayrshire Scotland).

Hot on the heels of 'Perpendicular', probably my favourite Deep Purple, album to date, I bought this fine collection of songs. I love Steve Morse's guitar work and he brings a new edge and purpose to the older material. The whole set is performed immaculately with enthusiasm and excitement which belies the age of the band members. If you like Purple, buy this one now (that's if you haven't already)! I can't wait to hear 'Total Abandon'!

And it is together with Purpendicular the best Deep Purple album since the Mk. II lineup. Steve Morse is a truly fantastic guitar player.

I bought this album on the strength of hearing the awesome track "Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming" while listening to Planet Rock. Just one of those tracks that makes you stop and go "what is that amazing song? I gotta find the album that's on right now!"

I had never really heard much of Deep Purple's material (just Smirk on the Water, I'm ashamed to admit) before buying this album but I see what all the fuss is about now. Virtuoso performances from virtuoso musicians at the top of their game. I strongly recommend this album to hardcore and casual fansa alike. One of the gems in my rock collection.
