All but 3 of the 21 tracks on this were previously unreleased. Some people get caught up in the pedantics of regional blues and the questions of "authenticity" and "purity"; was Lipscomb a true bluesman, or a "songster", whatever that means. What he was was a great entertainer. A great man once said, "It don't mean a thing, if it ain't got that swing" - on this disc, Mance Lipscomb swings on every track. The accomplished guitar playing is a shear joy to listen to, and the vocals are rich and authoritative. You don't get to Lipscomb's mastery with lots of practice, it takes a life lived in unbelievable hardship, a mind put through a mangle and the resilience of a hero simply to get close to that thudding bass. I have been listening to early blues for all of my adult life and this album is up there with the best I have ever heard. Buy it! You will not be disappointed.
