Biography

Biographyby Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Pearl Jam rose from the ashes of Mother Love Bone to become the most popular American rock & roll band of the '90s. After vocalist Andrew Wood overdosed on heroin in 1990, guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament assembled a new band, bringing in Mike McCready on lead guitar and recording a demo with Soundgarden's Matt Cameron on ... I just picked up Live on Ten Legs and it is absolutely brilliant. I am a long time Pearl Jam fan and have seen them live twice so I know how amazing their live sets are and this album brings this to life impeccably. Pearl Jam have often found it hard to maintain relevance in the post grunge era - so seminal were their first 3 albums - but this just shows that they transcend beyond that and rightly hold a place alongside the greatest rock bands of all time. With songs such as Rearviewmirror and State of Love and Trust, Porch and Jeremy we are treated to the high velocity vocal and guitar performances that have defined the band over the years and it is no exaggeration to say that the hairs stand up on the back of your neck when Mike McCready's riffs are wailing out at you. This is a wonderful collection of brilliantly mixed and mastered songs that take you back to their angry early days and up to their more mature and melodic latter day material. If you love Pearl Jam this is a must, if you have always wondered what all the fuss was about - got hold of this and I'd be surprised if you listen to anything else as good this year.

A compilation of live cuts from one of the world's best rock bands.

Brilliant, energetic performances from a band that still has that stage "magic" 20 years into their career.

No disputing the quality of the album itself then but it's quite hard to see who this release is aimed at:- live albums don't tend to attract the casual listener, appealing more to the established fan who already owns the studio albums but wants the "live experience". The problem is, such fans are already spoilt for live material, with most Pearl Jam shows available in full and unedited on their official bootleg releases.

Maybe this explains the inclusion of 2 cover versions on the album - an attempt to reach a wider audience? PJ are a great covers band but these particular tracks (Public Image in particular) are, for me, the weaker performances of the set when compared to the band's original material. Otherwise there's a good spread of old / new material here, but inevitably one CD won't ever include all your personal PJ favourites...!

It's hard to capture on record the essence of a great live band but this offering comes close and is a great addition to the ever-expanding Pearl Jam catalogue! Long may it last!

When Pearl Jam play live you know you are getting value for money with most shows lasting over 2 hours. With Live On Ten Legs it is the same from the artwork to the quality of the sound & finally the delivery of the music which is outstanding as always. With a surprise cover as the opening song to their biggest song it shows how they have lasted 20 years. Highlights are a storming version of Rearviewmirror, the showcase of how Mike McCready is the best & most underated guitarist of his generation & how a band & fans arrive in the same place on In Hiding. I just cant get enough of this mighty band. I could go forever but that takes time away from listening to them pound out pure Rock'n Roll.

I have my partner to thank for getting me into Pearl Jam years ago - and I'm very glad that she did.
"Live on Ten Legs" is essentially a sequel to the 1998 album "Live on Two Legs" and was recorded at different shows during world tours between 2003 and 2010.
Most of Pearl Jam's recognisable classics are present, as well as a number of tracks from their latest album "Backspacer."
Vedder is on top vocal form as usual, although he doesn't quite sing with that same deep vocal growl he possessed in the early days. Perhaps this is a reflection in the changing times; Pearl Jam's music is less heavy and more melodic nowadays when compared to their grunge material of the early 90's.
Best tracks include "State of Love and Trust," "World Wide Suicide," "The Fixer" and of course "Alive."
Overall, "Live on Ten Legs" is a sublime album. It will rightly sit amongst the best in Pearl Jam's live material.
Finally, the album packaging features images of the band live with a gatefold opening inside revealing photos of road crews used during the tours.

Whilst Pearl Jam's last 3 albums have not been to the standard of the bands earlier efforts- their live shows still remain incredible. Despite being a smoker Eddie Vedder's voice is still strong and unique. Jeff Ament plays a mean bass and Mike McCready is a guitar god. Stone Gossard's riffs have passed into folklore and Matt Cameron is incredibly likable- though I must admit I preferred Jack Irons on drums.

The band never play the same two shows (RHCP are you listening?) and Pearl Jam remain an essential band to go and see live. This complitaion is unique in that it isn't just fully loaded with the bands hits and has some neat cover tunes- kicking off with Arms Aloft as a great example.

However to capture the bands true essence I would have preferred that a live record be taken direct from one show and not spread over several different ones, but hey PJ still rock.
