Biography

Biographyby Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Pearl Jam rose from the ashes of Mother Love Bone to become the most popular American rock & roll band of the '90s. After vocalist Andrew Wood overdosed on heroin in 1990, guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament assembled a new band, bringing in Mike McCready on lead guitar and recording a demo with Soundgarden's Matt Cameron on drums. BBC Review

Given that alternative rock giants Pearl Jam have released hundreds of concert recordings in their official bootleg series, this live compilation seems a fairly unimaginative way to celebrate the band’s 20th anniversary. Hardcore fans can, of course, simply ignore it, but they’re exactly the people who might’ve hoped for something more. As an introduction to Pearl Jam’s on-stage prowess, however, this is a tidy effort.

The spiritual successor, and something of a companion piece, to 1998’s Live on Two Legs, Live on Ten Legs was recorded around the globe between 2003 and 2010, offering 18 freshly remixed and re-mastered tracks spanning the band’s entire career. Eschewing the greatest hits package formula, the emphasis and omission in the song selection tells its own story: five Ten-era tunes, four from their most recent outing Backspacer, nothing from the unpopular No Code and a track or two from the rest. All of which indicates that even if they tacitly – perhaps subconsciously – now acknowledge that their 1991 debut Ten remains their best album, this is a band moving forward in the firm belief that their greatest work may still lie ahead of them.

Kicking off with a rousing cover of Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros’ Arms Aloft, Live on Ten Legs achieves an odd coherence given its cut-and-paste nature. It’s easy to forget the fact that some of these recordings are separated by seven years, and by the time Jeremy rolls around three quarters of the way through, the atmosphere of a single, emotionally-charged event has just about been established. The crowds are uniformly huge – no intimate one-on-one exchanges here – and although the most rapturous responses are reserved for Ten’s heartfelt vignettes, the band injects every performance with a unique fervour. This is unlikely ever to be regarded as a great live album, but it’s about as slick a stitched-together affair as you’ll hear.

Pearl Jam took a lot of flak in the early days. Despite their enormous success – some would say because of it – sections of the media lambasted their lack of grunge credentials. Seattle scene contemporaries such as Nirvana, Mudhoney and Alice in Chains certainly exuded an air of danger, which Pearl Jam just didn’t share. But that’s probably why they survived where so many others did not, and in Live on Ten Legs we have another quiet celebration of what this band has always been about: music.

CD Description

Live on Ten Legs is a classic-packed live compilation album that celebrates Pearl Jam's twentieth anniversary year. The album features 18 captivating versions of Pearl Jam’s landmark tracks recorded over the course of the band’s 2003-2010 world tours by engineer John Burton. Newly remixed by long-time Pearl Jam engineer Brett Eliason and remastered, the material on the record spans Pearl Jam’s 60 million selling career. Included on the album are live versions of classic songs "Jeremy", "Alive" and "Spin The Black Circle" as well as "Just Breathe" and "The Fixer" from their most recent album, Backspacer.

I just picked up Live on Ten Legs and it is absolutely brilliant. I am a long time Pearl Jam fan and have seen them live twice so I know how amazing their live sets are and this album brings this to life impeccably. Pearl Jam have often found it hard to maintain relevance in the post grunge era - so seminal were their first 3 albums - but this just shows that they transcend beyond that and rightly hold a place alongside the greatest rock bands of all time. With songs such as Rearviewmirror and State of Love and Trust, Porch and Jeremy we are treated to the high velocity vocal and guitar performances that have defined the band over the years and it is no exaggeration to say that the hairs stand up on the back of your neck when Mike McCready's riffs are wailing out at you. This is a wonderful collection of brilliantly mixed and mastered songs that take you back to their angry early days and up to their more mature and melodic latter day material. If you love Pearl Jam this is a must, if you have always wondered what all the fuss was about - got hold of this and I'd be surprised if you listen to anything else as good this year.

Class Act! 26 Jan 2011
Format:Audio CD
A compilation of live cuts from one of the world's best rock bands.

Brilliant, energetic performances from a band that still has that stage "magic" 20 years into their career.

No disputing the quality of the album itself then but it's quite hard to see who this release is aimed at:- live albums don't tend to attract the casual listener, appealing more to the established fan who already owns the studio albums but wants the "live experience". The problem is, such fans are already spoilt for live material, with most Pearl Jam shows available in full and unedited on their official bootleg releases.

Maybe this explains the inclusion of 2 cover versions on the album - an attempt to reach a wider audience? PJ are a great covers band but these particular tracks (Public Image in particular) are, for me, the weaker performances of the set when compared to the band's original material. Otherwise there's a good spread of old / new material here, but inevitably one CD won't ever include all your personal PJ favourites...!

It's hard to capture on record the essence of a great live band but this offering comes close and is a great addition to the ever-expanding Pearl Jam catalogue! Long may it last!

Vital as ever 23 Jan 2011
Format:Audio CD
When Pearl Jam play live you know you are getting value for money with most shows lasting over 2 hours. With Live On Ten Legs it is the same from the artwork to the quality of the sound & finally the delivery of the music which is outstanding as always. With a surprise cover as the opening song to their biggest song it shows how they have lasted 20 years. Highlights are a storming version of Rearviewmirror, the showcase of how Mike McCready is the best & most underated guitarist of his generation & how a band & fans arrive in the same place on In Hiding. I just cant get enough of this mighty band. I could go forever but that takes time away from listening to them pound out pure Rock'n Roll.
