Live in Stockholm comprises two rather good and always interesting Don Cherry recordings from the late '60s early '70s, which means it's richer (but without sweetening or fat), colorful and more "real" (without rubbing anyone's ears in it) than most melodically improvised music by 95% of other modernist musicians of the later 20 to earliest 21st centuries. Cherry's tunefulness is never an issue, but sometimes the coherence of a performance or the good balance of his collaborators is. This program has two of Cherry's pleasing suite-like sets of linked songs, smaller scale than his masterpieces Complete Communion and Symphony for Improvisers, played by himself on pocket trumpet and wood flutes, piano and a little percussion in sextet with Turkish trumpeter Maffy Falay and Swedish saxophonists Bernt Rosengren and Tommy Koverhult, plus Scandinavians on bass and drums. Also Cherry's solo improvisation at the Stockholm modern art museum, solo piano and vocalizing. Always warm, sometimes inspired, well-paced, varied, and with some of his repertoire that to my knowledge is not documented elsewhere. If you've got the Cherry standards (besides those mentioned above & Where is Brooklyn, plus his work with Ornette, Rollins, Coltrane, duets with Edward Blackwell, George Russell), and you've delighted in less available works like Eternal Rhythm and the Jazz Composers Orchestra (Escalator, JCOA/Mantler, Relativity Suite), this is a good buy. Keep your eyes open for Live in Ankara, Blue Lake, Brown Rice. . ..
