Product Description

Beal Tuinne (pronounced 'Beel-thinneh) is the name of a group of West Kerry-based musicians featuring Seamus Begley, Eilís Kennedy, Lawrence Courtney, Eoin Ó'Beaglaoí, Daithí Ó'Sé and Jim Murray who joined together with singer Rita Connolly and composer Shaun Davey in 2006 to perform a collection of new songs. Melodic and traditional in style, the songs feature the sweet singing of Seamus, Rita and Eilís (daughter of Caoimhín Ó'Cinneide) aided by the gritty voice of man-of-the-sea, Lawrence Courtney, with choral harmonies by the full band. The band features acoustic instruments, played in West Kerry traditional style, unusually combined with the pedal harmonium (a portable, bellows-powered organ). The music includes trademark instrumental forays on button accordion by Seamus and his son Eoin who also features on concertina.

Shaun Davey in a smaller-scale setting 29 Jan. 2011
By M. D. HEALY - Published on
Verified Purchase
Shaun Davey is best known for composing such works as The Pilgrim, Granuaile, scores for various motion pictures, and a suite performed for the 2003 Special Olympics, all of which were performed by large ensembles of singers and instruments in major concert halls and and festivals around the world.

This recording shows a different side of Davey: Gaelic poetry set to music and performed by a small ensemble of about eight people including Davey himself, his wife Rita Connolly (who has one of Ireland's greatest voices), and a half dozen of their neighbors in the small West Kerry village where Davey and Connolly now make their home. It was recorded in the local church.

Particularly haunting is "Bás Mrs. Price," about two women IRA prisoners who were refused compassionate leave to attend their mother's funeral in 1974, sung by Rita.

Outstanding 8 April 2012
By Anthony Higgins - Published on
Format: Audio CD
Gorgeous voices singing beautiful songs. Subtle, effective accompaniment. I own about 200+ cds of Irish music. This is different from the ballads and slow airs I'm familiar with. A unique sound. I checked on amazon and their website to see if they have another cd out. No luck. Real pity. I listened to this from time to time and gradually warmed up to it. Recently, I listened again and became addicted to the sound. I've been listening to it exclusively for about a week- nothing else. (Have it on headphones as I write.) Mesmerizing. Recommend this without reservation. (Obviously.)
Great. Splendid. 23 Aug. 2012

I not only have the CD but I was fortunate enough to be in the church when it was performed. It was a part of the Dingle festival - Féile na Bealtaine. Dingle is a small peninsula at the west coast of Ireland. Annual festival takes place there in May. And it was one of the peaks of the whole festival. Such a wonderful music! And such good and generous people! Listening to it live was even better. I reccommend it to everybody - not only to them who like wonderful Irish music and music in general.

I visited Dingle last week and bought this when I asked for a local music recommendation.
This is incredible!
Amazing beautiful celtic music recorded at a church live in Dingle.
You will not be disappointed.
I have been listening to Irish and Celtic for over 20 years. This is possibly the best.
