Amazon.co.uk Review

Recorded at the Tractor Tavern on 31 January, 1999, this long-running fiddle and guitar duo set out to capture the intimate and informal advantages of a small club within the concert hall environment. The Tractor seems to lie midway between the two--its audience a well-behaved (but still enthusiastic) bunch. Most of the pair's repertoire comes from the eastern regions of Eire's County Clare, where Hayes grew up. Martin might currently reside in Seattle, but he can already boast six triumphs as All-Ireland fiddle champion. Cahill hails from Chicago (where the two first met), and is equally fluent in the languages of rock, jazz and classical music. The central stretch of this album is its 28-minute second track, a seamless sequence of 11 tunes. Mournful notes are held in the air, all the better to be savoured, mulled over and otherwise swished around the mouth. The highly evocative melodies unfold in slow motion, gradually introducing each new theme. Cahill will momentarily sit out, Hayes speeding up his flow, with most of the action springing from the latter's strings while Dennis shades, underlines, echoes or simply steps up the rhythmic pace. --Martin Longley

Martin Hayes brings pure emotion to the fiddle in a way unlike any Irish musician playing today. Although firmly rooted in Irish tradition he pulls in echos of classical and jazz and mixes them in a way which brings the music to life. He is accompanied by Dennis Cahill on acoustic guitar which acts as teh backbone to the music and the interplay between them is dynamic and inspirational. This is an album whihc could cross over from the "celtic" label into a much more wide-stream market. If you hate Irish traditional music it is unlikely that you will find anything in this album to enjoy. If, however, you like trad, are neutral to trad, have never heard trad or like jazz (esp. Grapelli) then give this album a whirl. I doubt that you'll be disappointed.

... I'm not sure what took me so long. I'm often disappointed by live recordings but this is music that gains its vitality through live perfomance especially in the hands of master musicians. Martin Hayes is a wonderful lyrical fiddle player but the star for me is Dennis Cahill; his guitar accompaniment is ethereal and understated, with a lack of ego that allows Hayes to explore each melody and lets each delicate arrangement breathe. The standout is the second track which fuses together about a dozen tunes over 25 minutes! I thought it might outstay its welcome but it's inventive and mesmerising throughout.
I noticed the comment about Dowd's No 9/Come West Along The Road fading out and share that reservation but I don't think it detracts from what's gone before. In the performance of those tunes Cahill and Hayes are also exploring slightly different territory with is looser swing and jazz inflections.
The Lonesome Touch is my favourite of their albums but this is a beautifully recorded cd of the alchemy that happens when Cahill and Hayes play live together.

Too short 19 Aug 2005

Superb playing, but for me the disc is spoiled by a nasty slow fade out on the last track. Total playing time is only 46.35 minutes, so instead of fading out they could have included another half hour of the concert.

Probably worth buying for the first 4 tracks.
