Recorded in November 2008 in support of her Quiet Nights album, Live In Rio finds Diana Krall on top form, lending her sultry vocals to a set of bossa nova standards. The DVD of this stand out live performance features the tracks: "I Love Being Here With You", "Let's Fall In Love", "Where Or When", "Too Marvellous For Words", "I've Grown Accustomed To His Face", "Walk On By", "Frim Fram Sauce', 'Cheek To Cheek', 'You're My Thrill', 'Let's Face The Music And Dance", "Every Time We Say Goodbye", "So Nice", "Quiet Nights", "Este Seu Olhar", "The Boy From Ipanema", "I Don't Know Enough About You", "S'Wonderful" and "Exactly Like You".

As an avid Diana fan, and a very regular viewer of the brilliant 'Live in Paris',I think that 'Live in Rio' is just an awful disappointment. From the stage settings to the lighting, the toppy sibilance on her vocals, lethargic deleivery and the sometimes 'iffy' repertoire, it just does not do justice to Diana and to sensual Rio. Paulinho da Costa sadly sometimes appears as a 'token Brazilian', because by and large what he is seen playing is not audible on the soundtrack!! The audience singalong might work live but on a concert DVD is really just 'kitschy'. Sadly 'The Girl from Ipanema' and 'Walk on By' are two of the most 'untouchable' songs ever performed after Astrid Gilberto and Dionne Warwick claimed ownership of them. Neither work for Diana! Diana is a remarkable talent turning even the country song 'Crazy' with Willie Nelson & Elvis into a dream performance. Too often on earlier albums the choice of repertoire has not been good. What a shame! Diana Krall - Live In Rio [Blu-ray] [2008]

Another pretty decent live concert from Diana Krall however it's definitely not as good as Paris or even Montreal.Early on, the sound is not quite up to scratch and Diana's piano is drowned out somewhat by Hamilton's rather clunky sounding drums - this though is soon corrected. The blue backdrop to the stage is just tooooo blue giving everyone an otherworldly aura about them that just isn't right.
Those technical moans aside there is much good music to be heard and at two and a quarter hours offers good value for money. The concert is made up of alternating segments between firstly,Diana and her quartet for two or three swingers before they incorporate the orchestra for some lush, gentle Bossa Nova. They then alternate this arrangement midway for more jazz/swing and then back to Bossa again.
Bossa Nova makes for beautiful music but,for me,the hard swinging jazz standards are the best with a lovely playful version of "Frim Fram Sauce".There are some lovely Bossa tracks too with "Quiet Nights" being almost a breathy whisper of a tune and "Walk on by" sounding just as good Brazilian style.
The DVD package also includes interviews with the band members and Diana herself as they discuss their views on Bossa Nova as a music stlye and what made them put the whole concert together in the first place.
A good concert DVD but certainly not the best of Diana Krall by any means.

Dont play until late 14 July 2009

Firstly the Video quality...Just one word SUPERB....I have a collection of Blu-Ray discs & the quality of some is not great but this one is up there with the best of them...Same high quality as Andrea Bocelli's Vivere..As far as Audio goes, I have a very basic system but sounds great to me.
Content...This is a very relaxing peice of entertainment & I rate it as brilliant but definately late night stuff....Would have been nice if there had been a few guests strutting their stuff but Diana performs alot of well known songs so you never get bored unlike a disc I bought from a gentleman performing at Madison Square Garden on his 60th birthday..Virtually all the well known material was left out so very disappointing
All in all a brilliant piece of entertainment which will be getting alot of "plays" from me....excellent value for money

Weakest Krall ever
Unfortunately it seems that Diana Krall's voice is slipping. She misses many notes, lots of false tones, she doesn't seem to be able to hold notes as before. Read more

Bossas not as good as I'd hoped
Diana Krall missed out on the opportunity to let Paulinho da Costa shine in his home country. She didn't really capture the spirit/feeling of Bossa. Read more
