4.0 out of 5 stars Live in Rio - A gentle stroll in South America 13 Jun 2009
By J. D. Naylor TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Another pretty decent live concert from Diana Krall however it's definitely not as good as Paris or even Montreal.Early on, the sound is not quite up to scratch and Diana's piano is drowned out somewhat by Hamilton's rather clunky sounding drums - this though is soon corrected. The blue backdrop to the stage is just tooooo blue giving everyone an otherworldly aura about them that just isn't right.
Those technical moans aside there is much good music to be heard and at two and a quarter hours offers good value for money. The concert is made up of alternating segments between firstly,Diana and her quartet for two or three swingers before they incorporate the orchestra for some lush, gentle Bossa Nova. They then alternate this arrangement midway for more jazz/swing and then back to Bossa again.
Bossa Nova makes for beautiful music but,for me,the hard swinging jazz standards are the best with a lovely playful version of "Frim Fram Sauce".There are some lovely Bossa tracks too with "Quiet Nights" being almost a breathy whisper of a tune and "Walk on by" sounding just as good Brazilian style.
The DVD package also includes interviews with the band members and Diana herself as they discuss their views on Bossa Nova as a music stlye and what made them put the whole concert together in the first place.
A good concert DVD but certainly not the best of Diana Krall by any means.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dont play until late 14 July 2009
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
Firstly the Video quality...Just one word SUPERB....I have a collection of Blu-Ray discs & the quality of some is not great but this one is up there with the best of them...Same high quality as Andrea Bocelli's Vivere..As far as Audio goes, I have a very basic system but sounds great to me.
Content...This is a very relaxing peice of entertainment & I rate it as brilliant but definately late night stuff....Would have been nice if there had been a few guests strutting their stuff but Diana performs alot of well known songs so you never get bored unlike a disc I bought from a gentleman performing at Madison Square Garden on his 60th birthday..Virtually all the well known material was left out so very disappointing
All in all a brilliant piece of entertainment which will be getting alot of "plays" from me....excellent value for money

3.0 out of 5 stars What a dreadful disappointment! 10 Jun 2009
As an avid Diana fan, and a very regular viewer of the brilliant 'Live in Paris',I think that 'Live in Rio' is just an awful disappointment. From the stage settings to the lighting, the toppy sibilance on her vocals, lethargic deleivery and the sometimes 'iffy' repertoire, it just does not do justice to Diana and to sensual Rio. Paulinho da Costa sadly sometimes appears as a 'token Brazilian', because by and large what he is seen playing is not audible on the soundtrack!! The audience singalong might work live but on a concert DVD is really just 'kitschy'. Sadly 'The Girl from Ipanema' and 'Walk on By' are two of the most 'untouchable' songs ever performed after Astrid Gilberto and Dionne Warwick claimed ownership of them. Neither work for Diana! Diana is a remarkable talent turning even the country song 'Crazy' with Willie Nelson & Elvis into a dream performance. Too often on earlier albums the choice of repertoire has not been good. What a shame! Diana Krall - Live In Rio [Blu-ray] [2008]

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok but not brilliant 30 Aug 2009
Comparing this to it's excellent forebear (the Live in Paris DVD), it seems the mastering and production values are not as good. Even though we get a DTS HD Master Audio track, it fails to convey the immediate presence of either the band or the audience the way LiP did. There are a few video issues relating to stage lighting which occasionally give a video-y and unnatural shimmery patina to the players' faces, which can be a bit distracting. And the band itself does not appear to have as much fun as they did back in 2000. Not a bad concert blu-ray by any means, but nothing like the excellence of Live in Paris. I wonder if that's ever coming out on Bluray; it was shot either on film or HD cameras by the looks of it, so a BD release is not beyond the realm of possibility.

4.0 out of 5 stars A lovely way to spend an evening 9 Aug 2010
Good songs, well sung, and excellent musicianship by Ms Krall and her accompanying trio (Jeff Hamilton, John Clayton and Anthony Wilson).

The extras on the DVD are interesting. Where Ms Krall postions herself in music is summed up by her talking of having gone through a bad period - losing her mother, Rosemary Clooney and Ray Brown.

All that stopped me from adding a fifth star was that I could have done without the string orchestra accompaniment on some of the numbers. But that's a minor quibble.

Watching this DVD is a lovely way to spend an evening - or a morning, if that's your preference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazon proposed it. It comes up trumps! 21 Jan 2010

The recommedation was worth taking up. 2.25 hrs of being taken out of yourself. It will come out of its case regularly and give me the feeling that I have just had a good night out without leaving the house.

3.0 out of 5 stars Diana Krall Live In Rio (Blu Ray Release) 16 Jun 2009
Got Blu Ray two days ago and must say that I am also disappointed with material. Sound is quite OK, but picture quality is not on the high level as blu ray can provide. Some titles (like Return To Forever or Pat Metheny) are much better with sound and picture.
Regarding concert ... almost same as "Live In Paris" atmosphere. I been expect much more from Diana Krall as this is her first blu ray release. Recommended for summer nights and wine...
