I discovered this album by chance, but after a couple of listens, I'm so glad I did!
If you like funky horns, hip hop beats and live music then you'll fookin love this.
The best things I can compare the Young Blood Brass Band to are the JB's, Breakestra and Ozomatli. So if you like those dudes you're bound to appreciate this.
It's mostly their own feel-good, ass-shaking brass band funk material which is excellent. The album is further spiced up by sneaky covers and samples which work well- Roberta Flack, Stevie Wonder and Beyonce to name a few. All tracks have been recorded live which adds to the excitement but doesn't detract from the production quality. They're obviously a very tight live funk band, I can't wait to see them.
In a nutshell, this a great live funk album that will make you smile and want to bust some moves on the dance floor. Buy it, you won't be dissapointed.

I recently saw the Youngbloods at the Reading WOMAD (2005) and was absolutely knocked out by them - with their stunning original sound and mastery of their instruments, their competence in several genres, and their unquestionable possession of that exciting "it" factor.
The disappointment was all the greater therefore when I heard this album, badly let down by the crude and amateur recording quality (for example, the fabulous, rap-style "Avalanche" is all but destroyed by a vocal lost somewhere in the 'mix', when it ought to be upclose and personal!)
This band deserve better; either recorded live with individually mic'ed instruments, or in the studio with a producer that will do justice to their great sound - now that's an album I would buy!

Buy this if you're a diehard fan. If you haven't seen them yet, spend the money on a ticket to one of their gigs instead.
Live, they are astoundingly good, a fantastic mix of funk and hiphop and bombastic brass sounds and huge, huge energy. This album has been recorded live at a variety of gigs so the sounds and the mix are compromised compared to the standards expected of studio recordings - it's a bit ropey in places, the sound is inconsistent from track to track, it doesn't flow like either an album or gig should.
But if you've already seen them live, the ropey gig flavour of the CD will just bring back all those great memories and have you bouncing about the room in no time :)

I love live albums, I find they capture the heart of the performance and doesn't use studio 'finesse', aka overdubs, air-brushed elemnts, etc.

As for this particular band, I find it's very, very cool. Such a unique sound. I guess my favorite things about it is the fact that the Tuba plays such a prominent role, and the player has SUCH virtuosity. I don't have any other albums yet, but I love this one.

My fav. tracks are the killing me softly cover and Elegy. They are creating something new and should not be overlooked. Get this.

Buy this album, but beware of live recording pitfalls 15 Sept. 2014
By Brent A. Morgan - Published on Amazon.com

YBB fans should buy this album, but beware of live recording pitfalls. This starts with great material but much of the remaining album suffers from poor audio fidelity. After a great version of Brooklyn on track 1, track 2 leads into the remainder of the album with a full sonic pelvic thrust but it's quickly followed by Avalanche, which sounds compressed and full of distracting echo. The Headbanger is next and also suffers from recording issues. Elegy makes a recovery but it's only partial, leaving me to wonder how much more I would like this album if it only it weren't suffering from venue-related issues. Other songs notably on the better half of this album include Pastime Paradise and Camouflage and Killing Me Softly.
