Amazon.co.uk Review

Recorded as a celebratory homecoming in a cramped Los Angeles venue at the end of the band's 1999 tour, Live At The Key Club is the first officially recorded document of the semi-legendary Pennywise making a typically sweat-drenched live appearance. More so than even self-confessed punk-sell-outs Green Day or Offspring, Pennywise are an example of modern punk's slightly depressing depoliticised ethos; there's barely time to think, let alone sloganeer between the jet-powered riffs of Pennywise's furious skater-punk anthemics. Which rather makes this the musical equivalent of naked bungee jumping or waterfall rafting; the likes of "Fight Till You Die" and "Final Chapter" neatly replace the stoic overtones of hardcore with the more familiar sight of a Blink 182-weaned fratboy moshpit. All fine, unpretentious fun--although on the downside, it does make the cover of the fiercely political Minor Threat's "Minor Threat" seem a little tacky. Forget that, though, and let yourself be swept along in the closing "Bro Hymn"--dedicated to Pennywise founder Jason Thirsk, who died in 1996 after a battle against spiralling alcoholism. It's a reminder that punk-rock doesn't have to be a political rally to make an emotional impact; Live At The Key Club hits all the right buttons, and it hits 'em hard. -- Louis Pattison

Stunning Performers 16 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Pennywise are a class band, theres no doubt about it and this live album certainly adds to this comment. Pennywise kick the show off with a bang with the opener "Wouldn't it be Nice" then go into the excellent "Can't believeit". Pennywise are not the band who just play new stuff at gigs, they like to play old skool aswell like "Pennywise" and "No Reason Why" both of these songs written by the late Jason Matthew Thirsk. Pennywise end the show with Bro Hymn the tribute to Jason. This lets the crowd well into the show by them joining in with the fantastic Chorus. Go and by this even if your not a big Pennywise fan!!!

After 12 years as a band, Pennywise finally released a live album!
And its a live album that doesn't fail to disappoint. The songs are played perfectly, the crowd sings along, PWise chants are started and the band talk to the crowd and riff inbetween songs.
These are the concepts that make a live album great - and they are all present in this album.
My one quibble is that they don't play many of my favourite songs, but that's just a minor detail.
The album opens brilliantly with my overall favourite Wise song - Wouldn't It Be Nice. They play all their hits including Peaceful Day, Perfect People, Unknown Road, Homesick and a great cover of Minor Threat. It all finishes after only fifty minutes with an amazing encore of the classic Alien and Bro Hymn.
If you're new to Pennywise, don't buy this first. Get 'About Time' or 'Straight Ahead' first.
If you're not knew to the Wise, definately consider buying this.
Its the best live album you'll ever hear.

P.S. Please visit www.communigate.co.uk/chesh/egg for some great music. Thanks!

Live and Raw 7 Nov 2000
Format:Audio CD
As a faithful Pennywise fan for many years now, I must admit I was a little disapointed with this latest offering from Fletcher, Byron, Jim and Randy. The songs are performed emotionally and in the true raw nature of Pennywise. However, the added, post-recording, cheers block out the outstanding music in some parts. The sound quality ain't great even those the music definitely is. If the choice is between this and any of the studio-recorded albums, go for the studio. Peace
