Book Description

17 Oct 2008
Going organic is the latest trend when it comes to food, and plenty of us have jumped at the chance to have more healthy eating options. Clothing has jumped on the organic bandwagon in recent months too, but aside from these two areas it's hard to see where else you can go from chemical to natural without having to spend hours researching organic products and then a fortune buying them. But it is possible to make your whole life organic without breaking the bank or giving up the little luxuries you love, and with the help of Live organic it's easier then ever to go natural. From organic cleaning solutions to chemical-free clothing, and from natural foods to fantastic organic flowers, Live organic has every aspect of organic living covered. Whether you're searching for the perfect organic food supplier, or looking to swap your chemical-packed cleanser with something all-natural, expert author Lynn Huggins Cooper can help you turn your lifestyle from chemical nightmare to organic dream. Simply brilliant.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good info! 28 Jan 2012
By Jodi-Hummingbird TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
This book contains a lot of useful information on why we need to choose organic as much as possible and also explains which products are the most important to buy in organic versions, and why.

The book is set out in a very easy to read format, with a brief introduction and short sections on each of the 52 topics.

This book explains why it is particularly important to choose organic chocolate and coffee, why it is best to ignore aromatherapy lists of which oil is for what and just go with what you like (love that!), why no VOC paints are best, why food grade silicon kitchen utensils are a safe choice, and so much more.

Unfortunately this book is very anti-eating meat (despite the fact it is what we evolved to eat and what our bodies are perfectly designed to eat), and very pro-eating soy and wheat. Two highly processed foods which many of us are allergic to and which should not at all be considered health foods. This book also claims that eating raw vegetables makes them easier to digest, which isn't true. (See The Vegetarian Myth: Food, Justice, and Sustainability, The Whole Soy Story: The Dark Side of America's Favorite Health Food and Eat Fat, Lose Fat: The Healthy Alternative to Trans Fats among many others.)

Despite these very small imperfections this book is very solid and well researched and I would recommend it to everyone, especially those that are facing illness or that have children. Reducing the amount of toxic gunk you take in is vital in avoiding illness and in recovering from it - along with getting lots of good nutrients in. Both are essential and often overlooked or their importance is understated.

There are wonderful alternatives now to lots of the more commonly used and quite toxic cleaners, personal care products and everything else. There is no need to accept lower quality products just by choosing non-toxic alternatives, almost always the products smell nicer, are nicer to use and work better too. You may in some cases pay a bit more money for some of the products, but it is worth it for the benefits to your health.

3.0 out of 5 stars Organic from a UK Perspective 12 Mar 2012
By foreside farm - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As a mother who tries to buy local and organic, I really wanted to love this book. Unfortunately, I had trouble connecting with much of the information because of the UK perspective (organic regulations differ by country and the availability of organic products varies as well). The table of contents does provide links to chapters with headings like, "The Natural Nursery" and "Love Your Laundry", but the formatting of the chapters was confusing to me. Especially confusing was the concluding heading of each chapter, "How Did it Go?" which seemed to be a Q & A but which left me wondering, "how did what go?"

Although this book is a no-brainer, I did learn a few new tricks to add to my arsenal of living a complete organic lifestyle. I wish it did have more US links.

4.0 out of 5 stars In Praise of Organic 16 July 2012
By Eleanor Stoneham - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I have a huge peace lily in my lounge but before I read this book I had no idea the good job it has been doing to clear the air of nasty poisonous carcinogenic formaldehyde, found in many things, from the clothes we wear to much flat pack furniture to many paints. This is just one of the very many tips I gleaned from this useful book. Yes some will object to the bias against meat (I am veggie so go along with Lynn on that one) and there are a few niggles for those who want to major on them, but all in all this is a well researched and useful compendium for all who wish to find ways to reduce in any way the potentially dangerous chemical gunk they expose themselves and their families to in their day to day living.

Like another reviewer before me I did find the "How did it go?" section at the end of every chapter somewhat curious, but I have now split up my peace lily into lots of new plants which will be dotted around the house from now on!
And by the way, keep that peace lily away from the children as it is itself poisonous!
Eleanor Stoneham, author of Healing This Wounded Earth.
