Biography

From Loudon:

After the War (II) my father Loudon (II) came home with his bride Martha (I).1 My parents had sex and nine months later I was born albeit almost backwards.2

My youth was spent in Westchester County, New York and Beverly Hills, California.3 I remember being particularly happy when we lived in Southern California.4 However there was romantic agony - I had a tremendous crush on Liza… Read more in Amazon's Loudon Wainwright III Store

Product Description

CD Description

Live performances recorded on a tour of the British Isles in 1976 and at McCabe's in Los Angeles in 1978. Wainwright is folk music's foremost black humorist, blacker at his bleakest and funnier at his funniest than anyone else writing today. Definitive solo performances of "Motel Blues", "Lullaby", "Kings and Queens", "Hollywood Hopeful" and more.

Worth exploring 7 Dec 2005
Format:Audio CD
A couple of weaker songs included, but to be honest it is worth the entry price for the version of Motel Blues. Or Lullaby. Or Down Drinking at the Bar. No one else can combine the sense of desperation with the detachment required to laugh at oneself in quite the same way. Whilst other songs have better performances on other albums (Hollywood Hopeful, for example, or School Days, which is best on the BBC Sessions), Loudon is generally heard best when it is just him and his guitar live in front of an audience. I only wish he would release more live recordings. And also re-release his first 2 albums!

Felt I had to put something in, after looking at the two rather lukewarm reviews below ! If you're checking out the man's music for the first time, go spoil yourself silly by getting hold of this. Loudon always thrives on showing off in front of an audience, let's face it and so this is the perfect release, showcasing some of his very best songs from the '70's infront of various rooms full of drunks. If you're wondering what the fuss is about, look no further !
