Think Warren Haynes, solo with his own band, also in a duo,oh and part of three of the best bands there is Allman Brothers, Gov't Mule and Grateful Dead, often wonder if or when he ever gets a day off. This set of mainly self written songs but also songs by Jimi Hendrix,Sam Cooke for good measure add upto a cracking concert recorded last November in Texas. You certainly get plenty for your money, the whole things on 2 Cd's and a full length DVD.His band are top quality throughout and include a tight funky horn section, a rhythm section thats also tight, a very fine female vocalist. This is one of those gigs you wish you were ll of great material, played and sung well, many extended road versionsd from Warren's recent solo album. Like many great artists their songs develop and expand by touring and playing live, they get longer and by that for me they are ever better than studio cuts. The cover of Hendrix'Spanish Castle Magic' and Sam Cooke's 'Change is Gonna Come' are literally superb not covers because the band take a whole new look at them reinvent them, they sound fresh, think an added horn section to a Hendrix song, fabulous stuff. Of course no Haynes concert could omit the Allman's classsic 'Soulshine' and it's here as an oncore sounding as new as the day it first appeared. This is truly a top live album by a rock great at the top of his form. The album if there's any justice deserves to sell by the millions, there will not be any better live albums than this by anyone this year.Got no WH then get this wonderful set, then another in case you wear it out.Definite five Star Set !

This review is from: Live at the Moody Theater (Audio CD)
When I reviewed the 'Man in Motion' cd last year, I bemoaned the fact that although musically superb, it lacked the wow factor of the band live in concert. This 2-cd has that factor in spades. A complete concert, 150 minutes in length, plus the dvd of that concert with 2 extra tracks [soundcheck+rehearsal]. This is Warren and the band at their very best. He has moved far far away from the confines of the Allmans and Govt. Mule and produced a soul/jazz/blues melting pot. Featuring a superb array of musicians with special guests on the horn section and also now-resident in Austin TX Ian McLagen [Small Faces/Faces] keyboards on 3 tracks. This is a band at the top of their profession, just so enjoying their work. Check out Jimi's 'Spanish Castle Magic', slowed down to a snail's pace. Not a track under 5 minutes, with some up to 12-13 minutes, they never drag, but draw you in and take you up. Finally a big thank you to Provogue for the high quality packaging and info. This is an essential purchase for lovers of quality music.

If you enjoyed the Man In Motion album, Warren Haynes' collection of soul songs, then this album is a must have. Featuring all the songs from the album as well as a good choice of covers and favourites from Govt Mule and Allman Brothers. The band is a slightly different line up from the album but still incredibly tight and they retain the same discipline in their playing. The live atmosphere adds something to any recording and this is no exception. Solos fill out and outros become extended jams and improv sections. The standout tracks remain numbers like River's Gonna Rise (now with an extended outro), Hattiesburg Hustle, A Friend to You, On a Real Lonely Night (for the sax/guitar duel), Take a Bullet, Fire in the Kitchen (from Tales of Ordinary Madness) and an excellent cover of Spanish Castle Magic.

If I had a criticism it would be this. Having lived with this material for a while I miss the fire and invention of Gov't Mule, particular on albums like By A Thread or like on the massive sprawling live show The Deepest End. That particular concert film (despite it's slightly disappointing picture quality) never fails to impress me with the shear range of styles on show. Who else would could pull off covers of Black Sabbath and Herbie Hancock on the same night, and then throw in guest spots from Victor Wooten and Les Claypool?

It's taken me far too long to discover Warren Haynes of the Allman Brothers Band and Gov't Mule so please don't make the same mistake.

This is an exceptionally good live album that combines blues, soul and R&B into a heady stew of intoxicating music. Of course, Haynes with his glorious guitar solos and his raunchy, passionate voice is the star but he gives plenty of room to the saxophone player, Ron Holloway and the female singer, Alecia Chakour to shine as well.

They are all very ably supported by a tight rhythm section, a keyboard player and the occasional use of a bigger brass section. Ian McLagen of The Faces also makes a guest appearance on piano.

I can understand why fans of Gov't Mule and the Allmans and their extended jams may not be so keen on this album but I think it is a delight.
