With the exception of the last track (Tito's Leg) this music was recorded for two John Peel BBC radio sessions in 1976.
Despite slightly different names most are reworkings of tracks from the band's first two albums, Unorthodox Behaviour and Moroccan Roll.
Kugelblitz and Ancient Mysteries were never released. The musicianship is truly stunning even at this early stage of the band, with Percy Jones' slip sliding bubbly fretless bass underpinning some quality sticks work by Phil Collins. The versions of existing album tracks (Dead Pretty, Miserable Virgin and Why should I lend you mine) are more relaxed, funkier and looser than the previously released versions, and as for Ancient Mysteries, this has to be not only my all time favourite Brand X track, but the best jazz-rock track of all time. It shifts, builds, subsides and builds again in a swirling mass of screaming mini moog and guitar that still sounds fresh after twenty five years. Kugelblitz is an extraodinary slightly meandering effort with some memorable moments but is perhaps overly long. Non Brand X fans would find this far too weird.
The disc closes with the live jam Tito's Leg from the two week residency at Ronnie Scott's club the band did in September 1976 (tracks from which appear on Livestock).
This last track is classic loose Brand X with Goodsall employing massive echo effects on his Strat and Lumley playing ripply Fender piano.
Overall a fantastic achievement, unfortunately not matched by many subsequent releases.

At Last, An "Official" Brand X Boot 13 Jun 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
After about a dozen unofficial bootlegs of live Brand X, ranging in quality from bad to awful, at last the band has authorized the release of some BBC tapes from 1976. Sound quality is quite good and the material, mostly from their 2nd album, is well performed, live & without audience noise. For fans of the band this is a welcome release.

25 Year Old Malt 29 Dec 2003
By Mark Treveil - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
There are just two reasons to buy this album; they are The Ancient Mysteries and Kugelblitz. Even a hardened fan of early Brand X will probably take 20 listens to get into these tracks; but what seems like endless noodling to end all endless noodling will turn into something to love forever.

These tracks roll on and on, with an extraordinary collage of sounds where no player really leads and yet they all seem to. It has tremendous warmth and yet real edge. A total contradiction, this is real 25 year old malt. This is not for beginners.

Japanese edition of the album 10 Aug 2001
By Miguel Farah Fugate - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is the japanese edition of the _Missing Period_ album. Unlike most other japanese releases, this one doesn't have any extra tracks (which wouldn't make sense, anyway, considering this is an album of a prehistoric period of the band).
