Most Helpful Customer Reviews

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful By GJ on 28 April 2008
Format: Audio CD
Over the last few years, the James Taylor Quartet have made some excellent albums but to many they are best known and best loved for their exciting, entertaining and energetic live performances. It is ten years since they last produced a "proper" live album, "Whole Lotta Live" (1999's "Penthouse Suite" was assembled from various recordings), so this latest live offering from the JTQ is well overdue.

It was, however, well worth the wait. Although the gig recorded here was unusual, in that the band were being their own support act, prior to showcasing their recent Motown-based material, all the usual elements of a JTQ concert are here. There are new numbers ("Tore my Heart Out") and old favourites ("Blow Up", "Theme from Starsky & Hutch"); mid-paced dancers ("Picking Up Where We Left Off", "Joe's Diversions"), frenetic all out, break-neck dancers for the serious, super-fit, jazz-dance fanatic ("The Exorcism") and slower, more intense respite from the searing pace ("Never in My Wildest Dreams"). There are originals ("Easy Time") and covers (a wonderfully funky version of "Boogaloo Joe" Jones' "No Way"); vocal features ("I Feel the Earth Move") and instrumentals ("Jan Jan"). All of the tracks though, give plenty of opportunity for the band to display their tightness and to leave plenty of room for dazzling playing. As leader, of course, James gets to dazzle more than most with his furious, screaming Hammond organ lending soul to each tune and building wonderful solos which increase in excitement and intensity, creating dense waves of sound and corresponding levels of joy and excitement in the listener.

This is the ultimate jazz funk album ever produced. The music is very alive and makes you want to book a trip to the UK instantly, to party with JTQ, which must be a true kick!
