After decades of waiting, this album has finally been released on CD. Many of us Olivia Newton-John fans have been waiting patiently for this to be released on CD, and we are finally rewarded for our patience. Originally available only as part of the massive (and expensive) box set ",,,AND THEY SAID IT WOULDN'T LAST," the CD is now available for purchase as a separate release.
The concert on this CD was recorded in Japan in 1972; Cliff performs with his band, with backing vocals by the duo of Pat & Olivia (Pat Carroll and Olivia Newton-John). The CD contains the full Cliff Richard portion of the concert, but leaves off the Marvin & Farrar segment of the original LP (side four of the 2-LP set). It is due to this incompleteness that I have to subtract a star from what would otherwise be a 5-star release.
The CD sounds great; the 2008 remastering is very good, although not significantly different from the sound of the original LP. Olivia Newton-John fans will be happy to hear her lovely voice here, even if just as a backing vocalist. Probably the most prominent Olivia/Pat vocals are found on the Bacharach/David medley of "Walk On By/The Look of Love." This is a close to a duet as you'll find in this concert; while Cliff and Olivia sang occasional duets on his television show, she is truly a backing vocalist throughout this concert.)
As for Cliff himself, this concert contains a nice mix of "classic" hits and newer material. Many of his biggest hits are included, but some songs that were new in 1972 are also performed. He is in fine voice throughout, and he and the band all sound like they are having a good time.
