Product Description

CD Description

Recorded in Tokyo in September 1972, this 28-track, two-LP package was largely overlooked in the U.K. and Europe; 1972 was not, after all, a vintage year for Cliff Richard -- in fact, the 1970s as a whole had been less than kind to the lad, as he continued to wallow in a lightweight pop vein that was ultimately as worthless as it was directionless. The handful of newer songs that make it into the set -- "Sunny Honey Girl," "Silvery Rain" and "Flying Machine" -- are so unexceptional that even Richard sounds dispirited singing them, and it's not until the late-set eruption through a host of golden oldies that this album picks up speed. Not that we really need more live versions of "Living Doll," "Bachelor Boy," and "The Young Ones," but they're here if anyone does. Sadly, the show quickly returns to the middle of the road, which is why EMI's decision to include it among the souvenirs of Cliff's 50th anniversary celebrations was marked by the original package being somewhat sliced up. So we lose the contributions of Olivia Newton-John that rounded out the original Japanese vinyl, and end instead with Cliff's own finale, a rock & roll medley and a punchy "Sing a Song of Freedom." Again, not one of his better songs, but at least it rocks a little.

A mandatory purchase for fans of Cliff, the Shadows and Olivia Newton-John.

Truly magnificent concert in terms of songs material with a fair balance between Cliff's 70s and 60s stuff. The sound quality is just Blu-ray quality or almost SACD quality - 40 years before the 24bit digital era we now live in.

Technically a Cliff and The Shadows (sans Bruce Welch) reunion concert in 1972 from Japan previously only on a Japanese double album vinyl G/F sleeve costing around £100+ but not anymore after this CD reissue. No actual CD reissue from Toshiba-EMI so far in 2011.

Both Shadows and Cliff hard core fans previously fighting for copies of the Japanese LP. This CD is 75% of a concert (3 out of 4 LP sides) of that famous live album.

Shadows are John Farrar, Hank Marvin, Brian Bennett, Alan Hawkshaw, Tarney / Spencer (band), plus Pat and Olivia (aka Pat Carroll and Olivia Newton-John).

Sleeve notes are a bit cheapskate with plenty of missing photos from that gig. John Farrar is using a Marshall amp on the artwork.

Sound quality is just absolutely bally-well mind-blowingly brilliant - or very "awesome"/"cool" if you are an American reading this for the Olivia material.

You can hear the buzzing of equipment during the song pauses which gives you clue that Toshiba-EMI wisely didn't attempt to clean it up with inevitable dire consequences.

Clock time is 63.50 so 16.09 spare so perhaps they just had to leave off the Marvin and Farrar half one 12" LP's worth of music from the original recording.

Cliff's voice is at its best during the 1970's/1980's.
Pat and Olivia are also superb backing singers.
Marvin, Farrar and Bennett are all solid as ever.
Alan Tarney's bass guitar is his 1960's Black Fender Precision bass guitar.
Alan Hawkshaw's keyboards are crystal clear.
Trevor Spencer on percussion.

Remastered CD. So who needs mp3 files.?

Dom-Ori-Gato = Thank you.
Japanese audience are very polite, restrained and well mannered so no shreiking to spoil the concert.

Ultra-high VFM at less than a tenner.

Will Toshiba-EMI do a Full Concert CD reissue themselves.? It would cost a lot more than £10 these days.

Not nearly enough (2 pages) sleeve notes from writers: P.Lewry & N.Goodall.

Wholeheartedly recommended. Marks out of 10: 20/10.

A Live Gem 13 Aug 2010
By C. J. Walker VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Cliff has released three Live in Japan albums'CLIFF IN JAPAN in 1968.this one in 1972 and JAPAN TOUR 74,This co was only available in 1972 as an expensive double LP import so its great to now have it on cd allthough it was included on the pricey box set two years ago.Missing from that original double album is the section with Hank Marvin,John Farrar and Brian Bennet but all Cliffs bits are here.I love these live recordings as they show off cliff's voice at its best and includes songs he never recorded in the studio.Throughout the concert Olivia Newton-John and Pat Carrol(juhn farrars wife and olivias early singing partner)can be heard on backing vocals and the duet they do with Cliff on "Walk on by/The look of love".liff may not have been having as many hits in the early 70's but he did a lot of touring and this gem proves it.

Cliff with Olivia & Pat, finally on CD 6 Oct 2011
By DVD buff - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
After decades of waiting, this album has finally been released on CD. Many of us Olivia Newton-John fans have been waiting patiently for this to be released on CD, and we are finally rewarded for our patience. Originally available only as part of the massive (and expensive) box set ",,,AND THEY SAID IT WOULDN'T LAST," the CD is now available for purchase as a separate release.

The concert on this CD was recorded in Japan in 1972; Cliff performs with his band, with backing vocals by the duo of Pat & Olivia (Pat Carroll and Olivia Newton-John). The CD contains the full Cliff Richard portion of the concert, but leaves off the Marvin & Farrar segment of the original LP (side four of the 2-LP set). It is due to this incompleteness that I have to subtract a star from what would otherwise be a 5-star release.

The CD sounds great; the 2008 remastering is very good, although not significantly different from the sound of the original LP. Olivia Newton-John fans will be happy to hear her lovely voice here, even if just as a backing vocalist. Probably the most prominent Olivia/Pat vocals are found on the Bacharach/David medley of "Walk On By/The Look of Love." This is a close to a duet as you'll find in this concert; while Cliff and Olivia sang occasional duets on his television show, she is truly a backing vocalist throughout this concert.)

As for Cliff himself, this concert contains a nice mix of "classic" hits and newer material. Many of his biggest hits are included, but some songs that were new in 1972 are also performed. He is in fine voice throughout, and he and the band all sound like they are having a good time.
