Product Description

When it comes to taking on logic-defying challenges, Queen have never fought shy: think Hyde Park, Latin America, Live. Here’s the case in point: just weeks ahead of the start of the band’s 2008 Queen + Paul Rodgers' The Cosmos Rocks tour the band were approached to help Ukraine’s AntiAids Foundation reach out to the youth of the country with the message 'Don’t Let Aids Ruin Your Life'. Despite the difficulties involved, Queen + Paul Rodgers made it to Freedom Square for the night of September 12, 2008. Over 350,000 Ukrainians came to see them play and more than 10million homes watched the show live on television. In all, more than 20 million took part in what the band recall as "an unforgettable experience... one of those rare things in life you know you will never forget. A meeting in Music, but also a coming together to fight a common enemy..."

I went to see the Cosmos Rocks tour in Liverpool and it was a fantastic night out with the whole band on top form.

Unlike some of the other moaners leaving reviews here I accept that Brian and Rodger have moved on and things are different now. One of the true pleasures is that the songs that Freddie wrote and sang are still going strong and work well with Paul's voice. It is good to hear some of Paul's early stuff again too and it was treat to have a few new songs from the new album.

OK it is a bit of a repetition - but then aren't all live shows? Look at the previous Queen releases of live shows on VHS and DVD and you will find that 90% of the playlist is the same going back to Live at Milton Keynes Bowl.

The extras explain how the filming was all rather off the cuff and last minute and it does show in places. The one place I was really looking forward to seeing again was the 'evolving' drum solo where Rodger's kit grows as the solo progresses. On stage it was a fantastic thing to watch but unfortunately it doesn't appear that the camera crew knew in advance what was going on because the whole experience seems to be pretty much missing with lots of close ups on Rodger's face and the crowd which turns the DVD experience into an ordinary drum solo.

There were some genuinely moving moments in the filming that redeems the overall show - not least a quarter of a million non-English speaking people singing Love of my Life flawlessly.

Finally where was GaGa? It was in the stage show so why isn't it in on the DVD?

All in all not the best concert recording but still worth having.

It's a live show, man! 17 July 2009
Format:Audio CD
I have been a Queen's fan for 36 years, and I'm tired of those reviewers who moaned about this DVD. I own all 3 Queen+Paul Rodgers' DVDs, they're all great! Paul has a different style, and his vocal in this DVD is the best of all 3. Me and my wife and even my children miss Freddie very much, he's incomparable, and Paul is almost comparable to him, only in different style. It's sad to see Freddie gone, and also sad to see Paul having left this line up. Please watch and listen to this DVD carefully, it's a great show, and-It's a live show, man! This concert is to raise fund for the Ukraine's Elena Franchuk AntiAids Foundation to 'save' people. Every live concert is different, it's not a studio recording; if you only care about what songs they played, perhaps don't buy any concert DVD. I own the DVD+2CDs+T Shirt package of this one, it worths every penny. One last thing, this DVD also has subtitles/lyrics, so you can sing along!

P.S. 1. Hope that all Queen's concerts and videos previously released in LD (laser disc) format will also be released as DVD or Blue Ray soon. I don't know if there is a tape of the 1979 'Live Killers' concert, if yes, please release in DVD or Blue Ray even sooner, thanks.
2. Is Dr. Brian May the only PhD rock guitarist, or even the only PhD rock musician (I understand that Roberta Flack is a PhD, but she's not a rock singer)? I really admire Dr. Brian May, for his preserverance to obtain PhD at the age of 60.

This performance is absolutely brilliant. Paul Rodgers' voice is stunning, and really does fit the songs well. He projects himself right out to every single member of the 350,000-strong audience. Not only is there a generous amount of classic Queen material, but many of Paul's songs from Free and Bad Company are featured. His solo acoustic version of "Seagull" stands out, as does "All Right Now". There are also songs from the new album "The Cosmos Rocks", which are also fantastic.
Another nice addition is that of Brian and Roger singing the lead vocals a few times (Love of my Life, '39, I'm in Love With my Car).
This concert also acts as a fitting and tasteful tribute to the late, great Freddie Mercury. For Bohemian Rhapsody and Bijou, his pre-recorded vocals are played in the background whilst the band plays, and video footage of him is projected on the large screens above the stage.
The camerawork is also very good, featuring many close-ups of certain audience members (many doing interesting dances!), as well as the band members themselves as they play (look out for Roger's tambourine incident at the end of '39!).
Also deserving of a mention are Jamie Moses (additional guitar), Spike Edney (keyboards), and bassist Danny Miranda, who takes the place of the sadly absent John Deacon. They are great musicians, and keep the concert going beautifully.
In all, this concert is superb, filmed in Kharkov's huge city square, and I would certainly recommend this to fans of Queen or Paul Rodgers. Honestly-you won't be disappointed!
