Simple Minds were formed in Glasgow in the late 70s by Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill. They are best known for the track "Don't You Forget about Me", which was used in the brat pack film The Breakfast Club in 1985.

Simple Minds came from the ashes of a short-lived punk band, they developed their musical style over their first four albums, incorporating new wave, experimental ... Read more in Amazon's Simple Minds Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Echoes Of Greatness 10 Aug 2009
Format:Audio CD
Bruce Lampcov's turbo-charged, echoing production on this album makes it sound like it's been recorded in the batcave - and an empty one at that. Don't worry, that's no bad thing Reverb pedal turned up to eleven, Simple Minds let rip in the only way they know how - bombastically, passionately and beautifully.

Recorded at their commercial peak toward the end of the eighties, it's not the standards of their most recent work at the time, Once Upon A Time, that resonate here, it's the complete live reworking of some of the songs from their previous two albums, New Gold Dream and Sparkle In The Rain that make the hairs on the back of the neck stand to attention.

Big Sleep is slowed to allow a vocal performance from Jim Kerr that is at once authorative, yet vulnerable - the heartbreaking keyboard coda playing over the song like the you're actually receiving your last rites but don't mind. Someone, Somewhere In Summertime is beefed up from the album version but retains its ethereal essence. Book Of Brilliant Things becomes the hands-in-the-air celebration rock-out it was surely written as, and, its sister song: East At Easter, stripped down from the trappings of the band becomes Kerr's heart-wrenching solo performance on the album.

You could nit-pick that no album before New Gold Dream was represented here, save a snippet of Love Song from the outro medely, but that would be getting away from the point. This album represents one of the most soulful UK bands of all time strutting their stuff at the peak of their powers. Bono once said that he wanted to be in Simple Minds - he knew the debt he owed them. The inclusion of Sun City dates the piece somewhat and the Dance To The Music band introduction is a bit toe-curling, but hey, this was the eighties after all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Live and lives up to expectations! 27 Mar 2003
Format:Audio CD
This the album that got me listening to Simple Minds music other than the traditional favourates Don't You (Forget About Me) and Alive and Kicking. The album has a great uplifting feeling to it that comes from the electric guitar and the keyboards. There is not one dull song on the album and is definatly worth the price. The only question remains after listening to this album is that of why have Simple Minds never released any other live albums? If unsure give the album a go!

5.0 out of 5 stars turn up the volume! 9 Jun 2009
Format:Audio CD
Simply a fantastic snapshot of the time, and Simple Minds at their peak. I would suggest max volume in the car or on headphones to get the best effect from this. Had a wobbly cassette version of this for years, was so pleased it has been re-released.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Stunning live Album by a great 80's band 18 May 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Yes a truly brilliant masterpiece. They are able to rework all of their songs on a live stage and still keep the central themes and spirit of the song. Highlights include Alive and kicking, Book of Brilliant things, somewhere in summer time, promised you a miracle, and of course the final song New Gold Dream.

This one of the most special band of the wordl, because combines some kind of music of the finally 70`s and early 80's, with passion, style, and brilliant performance. The result is an unique rock & pop sound, that I have never heard, which is its brand of the band, like any band of the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars City of Blinding Light! 1 July 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
What can you say about Simple Minds that has not already been said? Not much. This live album, from the band at it's peak in 1986 is a great way to celebrate them live. This is from the 'Once Upon A Time' tour, and people say they had sold out by then but that's a matter of opinion. They did create some artistically great music in the early 80s but by the mid 80s the band was one of the biggest in the world. Big band, big sound. I wouldn't say I am a fanatical fan but I am really rediscovering them and will delve in deeper in the future. If you want to rock out to this great band then this live outing is the perfect way to do it! It's a time capsule back to the great music of the 80s! A. Murray

I have been fortunate to see the band twice, and both concerts were stunning performances. This is up there with the best in live shows captured!
