When I got this album I was hoping for the pure pop of their earlier work complete with full arrangements from a backing band so when I first heard it I was somewhat underwhelmed. This is just the three of them, and a very intimate evening it is. All right, there's no backing band with bells and whistles, but you do get to hear the superb musicianship of the trio instead, which is very impressive - it almost has a classical-chamber music feel. And some of the songs have birdsong in the background which really does something for me, it's all quite enchanting and lovely.
This is a very mature Slapp Happy but the versions here are quite close to the originals. The sound quality is excellent and the Japanese audience are very civilized with no talking, whistles and shouts, and only clapping between tracks.
This album has really grown on me and I now consider it to be one of their best, my only regret is that Just a Convesation isn't on it - my favourite track. If you really like Slapp Happy you should make an effort to hear it, you won't be dissapointed. By the way Peter, Anthony, and Daggi, isn't another album due.

What can you say about Slapp Happy? From the early Virgin release, "Casablanca Moon" to their collaboration with Henry Cow, "Desperate Straits", the band produced music of pure genius. Their comeback album "Ca Va" cemented their reputation. How, we fans thought, would these avant pop gems fare when performed live? The answer is here.

Buy this album. Savour it. The likes of Slapp Happy will not come again.

Slowly but surely my favorite 'Pop' group 28 Mar. 2006

Slapp Happy 'live in Japan' gives you a special sensation after a few hearings. There's a melancholy through out not aparent in the studio versions. I've never heard Dagmar (the singer) with such soft and almost wispering voice before this record. Also the striped down approach to the songs gives them a new , almost like a farewell, sort of quality. Not really a record to start your Slapp Happy collection (start with
'Sort of' or their first lp made in germany...their recent one, 'Ca va' is good too...If you are more into progressive music start with 'Desperate Straights').
This is an album to listen when you want something dreamy and special in the air. Recommended.

Music to help us smile- At long last -Slapp Happy live 5 May 2005
By Steven Recchia - Published on Amazon.com

The songs written and performed by Anthony Moore (keyboards), Peter Blegvad (guitar) and Dagmar Krause (leading vocals) are wonderful.

These gifted artists should have won a Grammy award and played to sold out concert halls with their unique sounds.

Unfortunately, they only played a few shows in Japan.

Selections from those concerts are presented on this cd. This cd is worth the price to play.
