Recorded for radio in Germany shortly before the release of the Solid Ball of Rock album in early 1991, this live recording is an interesting and worthy purchase for die-hard Saxon fans.

The band sound on good form, and this is (to my knowledge) the last live recording you can find with founding guitarist Graham Oliver accompanying the ever present Paul Quinn on guitar. The class of the songs, and the momentum that Saxon were beginning to rebuild at the beginning of the 1990s really comes through with strong renditions of Motorcycle Man, Denim and leather, 747 etc.

The track listing is similar to 1990's Greatest Hits live - surprisingly it only includes the title track from their forthcoming Solid Ball of Rock album in an effort not alienate their hardcore fan base. Therefore, if you already possess the Greatest Hits Live CD, the only additional tracks you will get are Strong Arm of the Law, Broken Heroes and Solid Ball of Rock. However, as Greatest Hits Live is no longer available, this makes a decent replacement to document their live set and line up of the period.

The sound quality isn't quite as good as their 'official' live albums such as the Eagle Has Landed and Eagles Over Wacken, with Nibbs' bass and the backing vocals somewhat poorly mixed in, but its better than I feared it might be.

The liner notes by Joe Geesin are also a useful précis of the Saxon story up to that point in their career, and includes interesting interviews snippets with Graham Oliver and Biff.

All in all, as a Saxon fan I have enjoyed listening to this, and I feel its a good purchase if you are a big fan of the band. For those just breaking into Saxon, its a useful introduction, but there are better live albums available such as the The Eagle Has Landed parts 1 and 2,and Heavy Metal Thunder Live: Eagles Over Wacken (Glasgow Live Bonus disc version).

Play it loud!!

Another slab of live Saxon and there's nowt wrong with that. All the classics and more from Biff and the boys. A testiment to the band is that they are still as good now, if not better, than when this was recorded.

If your a Saxon fan of a certain age (40+) then you'll enjoy this one. A good reminder of the era it's from. Tracks you'd expect and one or two not played as much now. Bit of a no brainer for somebody like me who's seen 'em numerous times.

FANTASTIC LIVE SHOW FROM 1990 18 Nov 2013
By Edward J. mccarthy Jr. - Published on Amazon.com

GREAT LIVE GERMAN RADIO SHOW FROM LATE 1990, this was recorded at the same time the solid ball of rock record was recorded ( or right after it was done) BUT before it was released, personally as a saxon fan of almost 33 years now i strongly feel this album is a better live album then the greatest hits live cd/2lp set that came out as a tenth annivesary show back in the autumn of 1990 ( that gig was recorded in nottingham uk in march 1990) i feel this is a bit better of a show from the same era becouse it has a real bootleg feel to it and the tapes where not all touched up, obviously graham oliver was behind putting this out WITH BIFF BYFORDS PERMISSION from what i can read here, also a friend of mine and a great brother in SAXON over in the uk JOE GEEESIN interviewed graham and took care of the liner notes for this disc and he could not have done a better job, i feel like i have a great saxon bootleg from the 1990 european comeback tour ( at the time saxon where calling it the 10th anniversary tour) anyway the sound is very raw and in your face it is what i have become and i think every other saxon fan became to expect from a live saxon gig, biff even talks quite a bit of german between songs here wich is funny and interesting,, this was recorded at a time when saxon where trying to re build there then damaged relashionship with there uk and european fans, after power and the glory 30 years ago saxon sold out to american record companies and the mtv crap and it did not work here in the us and they went from large venues in the uk and europe to smaller venues by the late 80s so saxon basically got back up DID NOT SURRENDER and got the hint from there FANS just what kind of music SAXON FANS LIKE ME AND MANY OR I SHOULD SAY MOST OTHERS WANTED and got right back to basics with this tour an then in january 1991 with the solid ball of rock record, since then saxon have been spot on most of the time, anyway regarding this release this is a great show and it is really great to hear graham live again from these great days, nothing against DOUG SCARETT doug has done 8 studio albums with saxon now the past 16 years and most are fantastic but graham and doug as with most guitar player have there own signature sound, another funny thing about this live show is between crusader and broken heros i guess saxon needed to tune up or something technical may have been going on so the band played the classic DEEP PURPLE SMOKE ON THE WATER for about 70 seconds NO NO biff did not sing anything, but wow for that one minute saxon really where doing a great purple cover I DONT KNOW WHY, anyway i would LOVE a live saxon show from the forever free or dogs of war tour but this one suits me just fine for now, i strongly feel this is a must own cd for anyone who calls themselves a real saxon fan like me, i was so happy a couple of months ago when joe told me about this release and im even more happy that it lived up to my expectations what a great long lost gig this was, makes it worth the 23 year wait to hear this, i just saw saxon in september 2013 and they are STILL THIS DAMN GOOD LIVE!!!!! im not kidding, so if you want one of the best run through of 1980s saxon THIS IS A MUST OWN LIVE CD!!!!!!!!! i dont know what else i can say to convince anyone but just take it from a guy that has been a fan since early 1981 this is real good stuff, also for older nay sayers i really feel you should give the last 2 saxon albums a fair try that are great, ( call to arms 2011) and (sacrafice 2013) if you loved saxon from 79 to 84 i dont see how you could not enjoy these 2 new records, also joe did a great job last spring with the liner notes on 3 other saxon albums that where awesome in the early to mid 90s (solid ball of rock 91), forever free 92) and dogs of war 95) all i can say is buy this and PLAY IT LOUD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Great sound!! 28 Jun 2014

Saxon in my humble opinion is one of the best heavy metal bands on stage and this Live in germany 1991 is a good example. The song ride like the wind (live version) i think just appear in this live album.
