Whatever Andy Powell and Wishbone Ash have been working towards since the Illuminations CD in the mid-90's, I'd say they have finally found it. This DVD is awesome, and is superior to the excellent DVD "Almighty Blues." Simply put, Andy Powell and his new bunch of mates have been able to equal (and sometines exceed) the sound of the original Wishbone Ash lineup that recorded "Argus."
No 5.1 surround track on this DVD, but you really won't miss it, given that the stereo soundtrack is state of the art, and I mean state of the art. It's right up there with the Cream reunion DVD.
The setlist goes like this:
Eyes Wide Open
The King Will Come
Why Don't We
Dreams Outta Dust
Capture the Moment
Tales of the Wise
Standing in the Rain
Ballad of the Beacon
The new CD at the time was Clan Destiny, and the performance in Hamburg includes all the best songs from that album. To the best of my knowledge, Clan Destiny is the 1st studio CD to feature guitarist extraordinaire Muddy Manninen, and he shines onstage in Hamburg, almost always playing an old Gibson Les Paul with an amazing tone. Andy Powell opted not to play the dark colored Flying V he has favored over the decades, deciding instead to use a lighter colored Flying V (not the white one) with an amazing tone, almost as heavy/weighty as Muddy's Les Paul.
In terms of guitar tone and guitar playing, this DVD is a must-have for any classic rock fan. Whoa - the two-guitar arrangements are exceptional, both on the new songs and on the old classics. The only thing that comes close of course, is The Allman Brothers Band, and I have all the ABB DVD's but this Wishbone Ash DVD is more satisfying than any of them.
I sure hope Muddy decides to stay with Wishbone Ash because believe it or not, he is just as compatible with Andy Powell as Ted Turner was back in the day. Together they make twin-guitar music like no one else on the scene today. Just wait until you hear the 17:56 minute version of "Phoenix." No drum solo, just 17:56 minutes of 2 guitars expertly weaving around each other in a song that blends composition and improvisation in a way that had me saying "Wow" over and over again. This DVD is a 5 star release, but it was put out by a small label, and will likely go out of print in the US. So get it while you can, you won't regret it.
