4.0 out of 5 stars Ash on stage in Germany 2007 7 Nov 2007
There are always arguments amongst the Ash faithful about the various merits of both versions of the band currently touring. My view is, why not enjoy them both? On this recording Andy Powell takes the (almost!) current line-up to der Fabrik in Hamburg. The band is tight and clearly enjoying themselves, heck, even the normally reserved Finnish guitarist Muddy breaks into the occasional grin! The band run through a number of classics from the Argus period and later, but also come up to date with tracks from Clan Destiny, the last studio cd. Muddy's style compliments and contrasts Andy sporting his familiar Flying V and the two keep that twin lead sound alive. The only weakness for me is Andy's vocals, which are not really on a par with either Ted or Martin Turner - but let's not to start that argument off again! Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Healing Ground 23 Jan 2008
By grego - Published on
Whatever Andy Powell and Wishbone Ash have been working towards since the Illuminations CD in the mid-90's, I'd say they have finally found it. This DVD is awesome, and is superior to the excellent DVD "Almighty Blues." Simply put, Andy Powell and his new bunch of mates have been able to equal (and sometines exceed) the sound of the original Wishbone Ash lineup that recorded "Argus."
No 5.1 surround track on this DVD, but you really won't miss it, given that the stereo soundtrack is state of the art, and I mean state of the art. It's right up there with the Cream reunion DVD.

The setlist goes like this:
Eyes Wide Open
Healing Ground
The King Will Come
The Warrior
Why Don't We
Dreams Outta Dust
The Raven
Sometime World
Capture the Moment
Tales of the Wise
Almighty Blues
Standing in the Rain
Blind Eye
Ballad of the Beacon
Blowing Free

The new CD at the time was Clan Destiny, and the performance in Hamburg includes all the best songs from that album. To the best of my knowledge, Clan Destiny is the 1st studio CD to feature guitarist extraordinaire Muddy Manninen, and he shines onstage in Hamburg, almost always playing an old Gibson Les Paul with an amazing tone. Andy Powell opted not to play the dark colored Flying V he has favored over the decades, deciding instead to use a lighter colored Flying V (not the white one) with an amazing tone, almost as heavy/weighty as Muddy's Les Paul.

In terms of guitar tone and guitar playing, this DVD is a must-have for any classic rock fan. Whoa - the two-guitar arrangements are exceptional, both on the new songs and on the old classics. The only thing that comes close of course, is The Allman Brothers Band, and I have all the ABB DVD's but this Wishbone Ash DVD is more satisfying than any of them.

I sure hope Muddy decides to stay with Wishbone Ash because believe it or not, he is just as compatible with Andy Powell as Ted Turner was back in the day. Together they make twin-guitar music like no one else on the scene today. Just wait until you hear the 17:56 minute version of "Phoenix." No drum solo, just 17:56 minutes of 2 guitars expertly weaving around each other in a song that blends composition and improvisation in a way that had me saying "Wow" over and over again. This DVD is a 5 star release, but it was put out by a small label, and will likely go out of print in the US. So get it while you can, you won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wishbone Ash "Live in Hamburg" = A Great Guitar and Band Concert DVD!!!!!! 2 Sep 2009
By Gary Covington - Published on
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This is an excellent "Guitar & Band" concert dvd by Wishbone Ash. You get two lead guitar players(including the lead singer), a bass guitar player, and a drummer. You get a total of 18 songs, with an approximate running time of 135 minutes. Some of these songs are quite lengthy, and include some "great" guitar playing solos.

The song set is as follows:

1.Eyes Wide Open
2.Healing Ground
3.The King Will Come (8.05 minutes)
4.The Warrior
5.Why Don't We (7.58 minutes)
6.Dreams Outta Dust
7.The Raven
8.Sometime World (7.03 minutes)
11.Capture the Moment)
12.Tales of the Wise (9.20 minutes)
13.Almighty Blues
14.Standing in the Rain
15.Phoenix (17.56 minutes)
16.Blind Eye
17.Ballad of the Beacon

Hidden Track:
Blowing Free (12.30 minutes)

Bonus features:
Interviews & Backstage footage

Overall, this is a great "guitar-oriented" concert DVD by Wishbone Ash. So, if you like "guitar-oriented" rock, you should really enjoy this one. I sure do enjoy mine.

I was fortunate enough to see Wishbone Ash during the "Live Dates Tour". They put on one helluva show way back when. All's I can say is this new version of Wishbone Ash COOK's. You could call these guy's "3 Guitars and A Drum" it doesen't matter to me. I love the duel Guitar's always have! The music quality is excellent, I set may speakers to "All Stereo" Cranked it up, missed 4 phone calls from my wife. I'm glad I found this DVD, also thanks to the other reviewer's. Thank You Andy Powell and Wishbone Ash

This is a guitar player's dream. Both guitarists get excellent tones from their Les Paul and Flying V.These guys were always a class act.Wish there was more older material from the first four albums but that's a minor gripe. If only we could have more guitar heroes like these guys. They were plentiful back in the 70's.
