Is this the greatest live album ever? no ,is it the greatest Skynyrd live album ever?,no, what it is, is a damn fine tribute to the legacy of Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Essentially recorded as a tribute/30th anniversary of the the plane crash in '77 this a a respectful rather than balls to the wall performance and is all the better for it.
Opening in laid back style with 'Travelin Man' the scene is set, with flashbacks of 'Ronnie' on the screen before ambling into 'Workin' the band sedately taking to the stage rather than the passion in days gone by.
The crowd stirs when the double whammmy of 'Whats Your Name/That Smell' raises the stakes before a superb 'Simple Man' takes you back to the early days.
Next up a medley of sorts 'Down south Jukin,Needle n Spoon,Ballad of Curtis Loew,Gimme Back My Bullets before a mesmerising version of Tuesdays Gone rounds this part of the show off,Billy Powells keyboard playing on Tuesdays Gone, simply superb.
Next the only other 'Modern' Skynyrd song 'Red.White & Blue'.it didnt work for me originally and it still dont,it seems out of place at this part of the concert, maybe better as an encore, who knows but its the weakest moment.
The concert then heads for home with 4 absolute classics,'Gimme 3 Steps','Call Me The Breeze','Sweet Home Alabama' and the obligatory 'Freebird',no matter how many versions i have i never tire of these tracks.
The sound quality is pretty good, would have liked the drums/Bass a little higher, but the guitars and especially the keyboards are fantastic while Johhny's vocals excellent as ever.
As a tribute to the departed members and especially those recently gone ,Billy Powell(RIP) and Ean Evans(RIP)this is excellent.A word too for Mark Matejka who puts in a sterling performance replacing Hughie Thomason(RIP) but the star of the show is Ricky Medlocke, while Gary Rossington seems content to stay in the background,Medlocke relishes his role as lead guitarist and plays some fine solos especially on 'Needle....' & 'Freebird'.
The dvd is essentially the same as the disc with a small intro piece with Johhny,Gary & Ricky talkin about the band, the dvd is well shot and captures the performance,a performance that shows Skynyrd gracefully accepting heritage status and ensuring the Freebird carries on,its a mark of their professionalism that the band appear to be playing as if to an intimate crowd despite the huge audience in attendance, both parties celebrating together.
The packaging is spartan, nothing to write home about but at this price its an absolute bargain and should be picked up immediately
