Way way back in the mid 80's I first had a glimpse of the guitar phenomenon that is Eric Johnson via a flexi-disc of the jaw dropping 'Cliffs of Dover' in 'Guitar' magazine. Not since Jimi Hendrix's Voodoo Chile had I heard such a vast & powerful guitar tone- but this guy sounded like he'd studied Hendrix via Stravinsky...! Back then most guitarists had that awful 80's fizzy guitar tone, with what musicians describe as repetative 'widdly' guitar licks... but not this guy! Mind boggling technique, soaring guitar tones that sounded like a 100lb violin... I was sold on the spot and have been ever since. But it was at least five years later with the album 'Ah Via Musicom' that fame and grammy nominations finally found Eric Johnson getting the recognition so richly deserved for all those years of woodshedding & sheer hard work. Here at last on DVD is his eponymous debut on the now famous TV show called Austin City Limits. This was the show that his purpleness 'Prince' saw Eric for the amazing talent he is, and put pressure on record companies to sign him- the rest is history... Whilst still not a household name, Eric has remained for me a beacon of what can be done with the electric guitar as a unique voice, and also then influenced many other better known guitarists- most namely Joe Bonamassa, who now almost quotes Eric's solos note for note, not a bad thing I might add! Nice to see (and hear) properly Eric's debut to the world- I can now finally throw my very fuzzy & much copied VHS the show away, and see what the hell those fingers are doing...! Enjoy!

This was bought with other cds in preparation for a live Johnson gig coming shortly. The DVD is brilliant, showcasing his acoustic finger-picking mastery and a Wes Montgomery jazz number, in addition to his usual quality soulful blues Can't wait for the gig.

DVD/CD ACL '84 Eric Johnson Performance 7 Dec. 2010
By JMM - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
This DVD/CD twin pack is, indeed, a live 1984 performance aired on Austin City Limits that same year. I know this for a fact since my wife and I were there the evening of the shoot. This power trio was billed as "Eric Johnson and The Avenue". The group included Rob Alexander on bass (great angelic voice) and Steve Meador on drums. My wife and I attended many of Eric's shows in the Houston area and we enjoyed this particular lineup during that time period. It was a period just before the "Tones" album was produced.

This performance includes one of my all-time favorite pop songs "All I Need" that Eric wrote and had been performing for several years prior to this performance. I'm glad it showed up on this DVD/CD. It is great to have this on DVD since all I had, previously, was an old grainy VHS (in mono) I made when this ACL originally aired. The original segment had also been cut to 30 minutes versus the 48+ minutes (also in DTS 5.1) included on this release. Great to see the additional material and hear the great audio remastered so well.

There is another ACL performance out there that I hope gets released, as well. Maybe we will see it later in 2011.

vintage Eric recording! 29 Nov. 2010
By Benjamin J. Neiman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
I became aware of Eric when Guitar Player mag did a piece on the unknown genius from Austin Texas in 1982. I traded for some live tapes soon after and was anxiously awaiting his debut "Tones", but this aired earlier and it was a gas to see him for the first time! He is excellent here, very inspired, and includes almost all the styles he plays-jazz,country,rock, and folk. There really isn't much he doesn't do well. I'm not sure why "Manhattan" is not included, maybe it will surface as a Japanese release bonus track. Regardless, this is a great cd, and if Manhattan was included I would give this 5 stars.

Awesome performance! 18 Jan. 2011

This is an incredible value -- you get the DVD and the audio CD and get to see Eric when he was just 29, on a very good quality recording. The set includes wonderful older, and more raw versions of Soulful Terrain, Friends, Cliffs of Dover, and Bristol Shores -- and three (new) old songs done with this earlier bassist (who happens to sing very well) and drummer. The set ends with a nice blistering version of the Hendrix song: Spanish Castle Magic. In the middle are several acoustic pieces including an amazing version of Eric's "Tribute to Jerry Reed" and a beautiful version of Paul Simon's "April Comes She Will." Cliffs of Dover is especially splendid, with ridiculously good guitar wizardry that is full of unbridled verve. And true to form, Eric does a cover of Wes Montgomery's Down Here on the Ground, showcasing the brilliance of both he and Wes.

Listening to the audio CD will help you appreciate the depth of nuance and rapid but finessed articulation that is easily missed in a DVD of the lightning quick, "makes-it-look-easy," on-stage guitar wizardry of Eric Johnson.

If you like Eric Johnson, you will love this release. His releases are too few and far between, and this gives you a front row seat to a 1984 Eric Johnson concert in his hometown of Austin Texas. There is a nice, raw unpolished edge in this 1984 work that is harder to find in later incarnations of quintessential perfectionist Eric Johnson. Per usual, Eric is off the charts and what you get is far more valuable than the price of purchase. Do yourself a favor and buy it now!

The Worldwide Discovery of EJ 1 Dec. 2010
By Giles Girl - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
We should all be glad they decided to dig up this audio treasure of EJ's '84 performance at ACL. Once I caught wind of this release, I went straight to pre-order it. And as always, Eric is brilliant. It was also great to hear him cover originals such as Simon & Garfunkel's "April Comes She Will," The Jimi Hendrix Experience's "Spanish Castle Magic," and Wes Montgomery's "Down Here On the Ground." However... the only thing I didn't quite understand (nor did anyone else apparently), is why are there only 11 songs, a mere 45 minutes on a single disc that can by itself hold up to 80 minutes, from this legendary performance? There's the rarity "I'm Tryin'," "Victory," "Trail of Tears..." Man, what about "Manhattan," "Emerald Eyes," or, jeez, "Trademark?" Ah well. Enough protest. This is an amazing live album, as expected.

Great, but incomplete! 3 Jan. 2011
By DC from TX - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Eric Johnson's debut on ACL! I have been waiting 25 years for them to finally release this show on DVD. I even wrote KLRU a letter once, begging them to put this out. For years, the only way to see this was on grainy VHS copies of the original TV broadcast. So they finally release it, and don't even include the entire performance! I don't understand why they left a bunch of tunes from the set off here, it's not like there's not enough room on the DVD. I've seen the full unedited show before, and "Manhattan", "Trail of Tears", "Trademark" and "Victory" were all great versions and should have been included. Not sure if this was EJ's decision or just the record company.

Oh well, what is included is great. Eric is in his prime, amazing as usual, and of course his tone is outstanding. The sound is great, especially in 5.1 surround and the video, while it shows it's age in these days of HD, is sure better than my old VHS tape. If you are an EJ fan, of course you'll want to own this piece of history, although like me you may be a bit disappointed that it is incomplete. Still, it's better than nothing!
