Discover Miles Davis

by William Ruhlmann

Throughout a professional career lasting 50 years, Miles Davis played the trumpet in a lyrical, introspective, and melodic style, often employing a stemless Harmon mute to make his sound more personal and intimate. But if his approach to his instrument was constant, his approach to jazz was dazzlingly protean. To examine his career is to examine the history of jazz ... Read more in Amazon's Miles Davis Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Flawed brillance 30 Dec 2012
By Markws
Format:Audio CD
A number of reviewers complain that a Miles CD does not sound like their favourite Miles offering. What a waste of review time! Take this music as it comes - a brilliant band working together well. It may be flawed in places, but that is a facet of live music. However the level of creativity and the vision for a different kind of music is remarkable. Even if you choose not to like the music there is plenty to admire in the fusion of the musicians. Please buy, listen and see if you can create from this basis!

3.0 out of 5 stars Crazy Stuff 4 Mar 2014
By david g. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Decent enough recording as far as sound quality goes. Its certainly not Kind of Blue or even In a Silent Way. More like Bitches Brew on crack. Its hard to decide whether the recording is more valuable from a musical standpoint or for more of a musical observation of the collapse of Miles at the time. You can hear it coming in this disc. The fact the original release had no titles that reflected past recordings is telling and accurate. The later Classic Columbia releases with song titles is rather amusing.
Worth a listen but it won't stay in your CD changer long.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seething excitment! 17 Dec 2012
By groover - Published on Amazon.com

These are several Miles/ Bitches Brew era releases and each one has a special virtue to recommend it ( though Black Beauty is not especially interesting to me). This is Miles on the cutting edge of excitment with a band also out to blow some minds. They are tense, tight, restless, daring, pushing, seeking their way through the compostions they seem to be making new on the spot. A very vibrant thrilling document of Miles and band in lift off mode.
