Product Description

From Amazon.com

Guns N' Roses' career could be neatly summed up in a lyric from their song "Pretty Tied Up": "I just found a million dollars that someone else forgot." Indeed, GNR satisfied a grassroots hunger for bigger-than-life hard rock at a time when legions of alternative bands were enjoying their first burst of overweening critical attention and commercial cachet. The last and most spectacularly successful band to prosper from Hollywood's burgeoning 1980s Sunset Strip glam-metal scene wrapped a couple decade's worth of sometimes tired clichés around a tight, assaultive musical attack that enticed millions yearning for poor role models. And if their edgy songs often blurred fantasy and reality, the best of them had a street-level honesty that couldn't be denied. A de facto greatest-hits collection culled from performances recorded around the world, Live Era best documents the early, ferocious performing prime of GN'R's original quintet on its first disc, leaning heavily on their landmark Appetite for Destruction album to great effect. But the second volume often chronicles the band's steady decline into bloated self-parody and neo-Vegas "professionalism."--Jerry McCulley

I was a massive GnR fan way back when & this album just brought all the tracks back to life. There is so much energy here w/Nightrain, Mr Brownstone, etc just rocking out. There is the superbly diverse blues playout to Move To The City &, of course, Slash at the fore on every track. The Estranged version here is one of my top ever tracks. PD!

This album seems to largely borrow from the videos of Use Your Illusion I & II filmed in Tokyo and as such is a little disappointing if you already own them. However, it can't be faulted for the breadth of material. It would have been good however, if they'd have spread the recordings over their whole career and listed the dates of the recordings as this, as I have said, seems too much like a single recording from the Use Your Illusion Tour.

SUPERB 4 Mar 2005
Format:Audio CD
In my opinion this is the Greatest Hits for Guns N' Roses, not as many covers on the CD as there is on the actual Greatest Hits CD. It has every song from Appetite For Destruction and the best from the Use Your Illusion albums.

Having never seen or heard the band live before hearing this CD I was a little upset with it at first but it really grows on you. The way AXL's screams aren't exactly in tune every time and the guitar solo's aren't exactly the same as the studio albums, but that's live music and you can almost feel the sole of the band through this album.

Some versions of the songs on this album are actually better than the studio releases, there is a great version of Used To Love Her on this album, I also think Estranged on this album is fantastic.

All in all this is a must have album for any Guns N' Roses fan even if just to get a feel for what the band must of been like to see live. I would even rate this as my 2nd favourite Guns N' Roses CD behind Appetite.

Go buy it!

Almost perfect!
This is a great set, the only things missing in my opinion are Civil War and Coma (and I'm pretty sure the Japanese version of this album had Coma as a bonus on it). Read more
