Blast Off! 22 May 2003
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Space Metal was an Ok album but this is superb. The live setting for the Space Metal tracks and the use of older material to contrast the new gives the set an atmosphere that totaly transforms the material. Instead of the Rainbow/Malmsteme feel of the studio album we get Rocked up Pink Floyd. The use of female vocals and varied instrumentation gives loads of light and shade. Arjen himself feels this is a better sounding album than its sibling.
The bonus DVD is even better than the album. The visulas are cool and the sound quality is very good (even though it is only in stereo it blasts most 5.1 mixes out of the water). Finaly, the packaging is top notch - Inside Out records have a habit of turning out stunning packages - and represents incredible value for money. A double CD a full DVD all gracefully presented, come on what are you waiting for. Go get - Now!

The lack of live albums from Lucassen's projects makes this a real treat for Ayreon and Star One fans. "Live On Earth" spans several albums; it isn't confined to Star One's offerings and the Ayreon material is by far the strongest content. The scene is set with the Jarre-like "Lift Off" and Ayreon-esque "Set Your Controls" with its furiously paced guitars and percussion coupled with harpsichord-like synths though these transition into wailing synths and an irritating wailing female vocal. "High Moon" begins dark and raw, but doesn't live up to this dark promise. "Songs of the Ocean" disappointingly lacked sparkle. "Valley of the Queens" is beautifully and ethereally executed.

While the first part of the live concert has a disjointed feel, the second part is meatier and the mix of vocals and instruments is, in my opinion, better.. "Amazing Flight in Space" is quite simply a superb prog rock track full of unashamedly self-indulgent keyboards and guitars and ideally suited to live performance. "Intergalactic Space Crusaders" is essentially "Blakes 7 The Musical" and this energetic live version works better than the studio version. "Castle Hall" is suitably dark and brooding and, along with "The Eye of Ra", is another track which really works. The finale is a satisfyingly meaty rendition of "The Two Gates".

Throughout the first half, the vocals (especially the female vocals) needed to be stronger in the mix. If you want something to contrast the polished studio albums, you'll enjoy this (and with 2 CDs and a DVD it's good value), but if you are mainly attracted to the polish of an Ayreon/Star One studio album, you may be disappointed with the first part of this live concert.

for those of us who like Arjen's music be it Aryeon, Ambeon or Star One this is probably the only way you are going to see him .The limiting factor being his grandiose Rock Operas requiring so many different vocalists not able to tour at the same time. This was probably his only chance , a short Dutch tour. It was not originally intended to be filmed , just sound recorded so what you see is what you get . A reasonably well filmed dvd, it can't match DT LIVE AT BOUDOKAN but it is an excellent show all the same. Most of the vocalists from star one are there except Dan Swano but replaced by Robert Soetebok who is a little embarassing to watch at times but sings all parts well. Russel Allen and Damien Wilson excel as do the fantastic Jansen sisters. The young keyboard player Joost (who recently played on The Human Equation)is brilliant too. Arjen looks the part playing superbly (sometimes I think he's watched Steve Vai dvds) He is obviously enjoying seeing his creations come to life on stage.
All of them seem to be enjoying the gig and putting emotion in to it.The white lights at the back do spoil viewing to some degree and occasionally the sound drops but that may be from the extra film from camcorder bits added in from some fans.
This worth having for the 2 cd set alone but the dvd of the show plus the extras the extras (Arjen and Russel singing The Boxer during sound check) make it a must have.
