Product Description

CD Description

Few bands of the late 60s and 70s inspired such a devoted following as Van Der Graaf Generator. Fans found theirs some of the most rewarding and challenging music of the era. "The times were intense, and we were an intense, even scary band," admitted founder member Peter Hammill (whose work was a major influence on many musicians, including David Bowie and John Lydon). Splits and reunions, an ongoing Hammill solo career, CD reissues, a box set, sporadic one-off get togethers and on and off reunions eventually culminated in this studio rendezvous for three charter members of the band in December, 2010. On the evening in question, 120 lucky Van Der Graaf Generator fans braved a blizzard to travel to Metropolis Studios, West London, to take in a rare UK appearance by Hammill, Hugh Banton and Guy Evans in an intimate atmosphere that was captured in a manner unlikely ever to be achieved again. The DVD also includes revealing interviews with all three band members in which they describe this "unrepeatable, fantastic event" which showcases work from their recent A Grounding In Numbers album as well as their illustrious past. Fractured time signatures... Hammill's fervent, occasionally terrifying, vocals... the complexity of the band's music... the inscrutability of their lyrics... it all adds up to a unique and inimitable performance.

5.0 out of 5 stars VdGG triumph again! 20 Jun 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
If you are a fan of Van Der Graff and/or Peter Hammill's solo work this is an essential release- even if you purchased the original DVD a short time ago. This version scores over the original in that a 2CD set of the concert accompanies the DVD (which is identical in all respects) and the packaging is superior. For those who didn't catch the DVD-only release eight of the eleven songs are from 2005 onwards, consistent with the group's philosophy of going forward rather than reliving the glorious past. Three songs come from the then unreleased A Grounding in Numbers, including the wonderful Bunsho and Your Time Starts Now. Old material is represented by excellent versions of Lemmings, Man-Erg and Childlike Faith in Childhood's End. Go for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a legend, alive!! 23 July 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
A very good buy indeed. We are all going grey together but that it no way affects the music in any way. A superb concert in a truly fascinating setting. People who obviously care about the band and have followed them for as long as I have make for a truly appreciative audience. The band are tight and exciting playing great music from differing times. At this price a wonderful buy for a fan or even somebody who wants to dip into the band's repertoire.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great VdGG recorded live concert 3 Jun 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
As a long-time VdGG and PH admirer, I bought this double-CD + DVD package as a completist. But need to say that the performance is really good, and once again these old misters are playing finely and with a lot of energy. Really recommended live recording from these prog masters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great concert 14 Dec 2013

This is an enjoyable couple of hours and a bargain of 2 cds and a dvd for less than a tenner. Peter Hammill looks a little frail and his voice is weaker on some songs but that's to be expected when he's much older and has had health probs. The drummer is great and so is the keyboard playing - really tight instrumentally. The songs are all strong performances which is to be expected from 3 great musicians. It grows on you each playing and the audience are really appreciative. It's a reall excellent live set and worth the money and all fans of VDGG should have it in their collection. Shame Jacko wasn't there which would have capped the whole thing off - for sure.

3.0 out of 5 stars NUTTER ALERT-MR SANDS IS OVER THE HILL 10 Jun 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I have had very little to do with VDG,apet from remembering them from early John Peel shows, and a sporadic acknowlegdgement of the solo work of Peter Hammill, and the fact that they composed "Theme One" for Radio one, they were also part of the progressive roster on the highly respected Charisma Label.
CD ONE
"Interference Patterns" kicks of the album sounding like a cross between Emerson,Lake and Palmer and Dutch band Focus,
"Nutter alert"features a tune that is not unlike "I Put a spell on you" at the beginning, very good backbeat to this by the drummer and organist,it sounds a bit dated to me,there are few complicated time signatures here.
"Your time starts now"starts with some eerie sound effects then developes slowly, there is more of a tune than has gone before.
"Lemmings" i have heard before, but can't recall when and where, but at 14.26 this is prog rock as it should be this sounds like Peter Gabriel era Genesis, and in consequence the best track yet, also a bit manic vocally!
"Lifetime"is another slow builder, with a sixties ghostly feel to it,almost church like in atmosphere
"Bunsho"is another new song apparently,it sounds fine to me, it is heavier than what has gone before.
"Childlike faith" ends CD one and is just over 12 minutes of musical diversity.

CD2
"Mr Sands"is a jolly romp of a tune and at just over five minutes gets the ball rolling on this second CD
"Over the hill"is another 12 minute roller coaster of emotions, there is very intricate interplay on this, between obviuosly good musicians.
"We are not here" is amuch shorter track which puts me in mind of some parts of "Tarkus"by the afformentioned Emerson,Lake and Palmer.
