This is a well-priced and good length 2CD set that is once again a 'must-have' for serious fans of Weather Report. While there aren't really any surprises here for those familiar with the music, and arguably better live versions of a half-dozen of these tunes have been released previously, this package is a complete performance by the 1983 line-up featuring Bailey,Rossy and Omar Hakim really beginning to mesh. There is also a DVD of it on the way.
At the time it must have been a stunning concert to see; for this is Weather Report in their final great incarnation and in near-full flight. And it is fairly raw and unedited, unlike the epic 'Live and Unreleased' tracks which Zawinul (with Bob Belden) prepared and polished for release himself...compare this set's version of 'Where The Moon Goes'with the one on 'Live and Unreleased' for instance, and while the latter is much tighter and generally better, this one very clearly shows Zawinul and Hakim in the process of working out the dynamic of what they would play (and when they would play it) a month later in the London performance. So it's a fascinating listen, although only about 8/10 tight compared to the extraordinary playing on that later gig and the 1984 live tracks which make up part of 'Domino Theory'. Wayne perhaps isn't at his best and starts 'Db Waltz' on soprano...ouch, that changed on the record. It's loose in some places but on the other hand Bailey doubles Zawinul's bass parts with total, complete precision and Hakim was and is an amazing drummer.
Shorter and Zawinul's band stayed the course and defined the turf for 16 years; their music has lasted and sounds fresh to this day and when they were 'on',there really was just no finer live band in the fusion arena. At their peak they were always a truly awesome experience, and although many may consider this not to be their greatest line-up it is still a complete gig and quite thunderously enjoyable, should be a very welcome addition to your WR collection, and completes the splendid 2011 trilogy of 'Live in Germany' releases on CD and DVD.
