I pre-ordered this set on Amazon and paid £7 for it. By the time of it's release it had gone up to £7.99. I think this constitutes superb value for money for even the casual Dylan fan. However if you are one of those who buys all things Dylan, a word of caution, all the music on these discs has recently already been released on separate discs. Looking at the tracklistings these four CDs comprise the following previously released albums: 'Life and life only', 'Carnegie Chapter Hall', 'Minneapolis/Bonnie Beecher's Tapes' and 'Live in New York Gaslight'. Each of these albums are currently retailing at around £7 each on Amazon, so it's pretty much a no-brainer that you buy this set rather than all four albums separately. I won't bother reviewing the albums track by track as several reviwers have already done so with the individual albums, which can be found on the Amazon site. The four discs are housed in a 'fatbox' style plastic jewel-case which in turn is housed in a card slip-case. The sound quality ranges from good to excellent, the best, in my opinion being the Carnegie Chapter Hall concert (disc 3). The one and only downside to this set is the lack of information. The tracklistings on the back of the slipcase are repeated on the back of the jewel-case. Inside the case is a paper insert which repeats the front cover photograph on it's front and the tracklisting on it's rear, no info regarding which tracks are from which sources. The inside of the insert shows two other album covers with the words ALSO AVAILABLE, these albums are Bob Dylan Live in New York and Bob Dylan Live in Minneapolis, the contents of both of which form part of the current set, so if you have this one you don't need those as well. Further info can be got by looking at the individual CDs on Amazon.Read more ›

This set of early Bob Dylan live performances is tremendous value despite the fact, as already noted by another reviewer, that the documentation is poor and the running order is odd. My interpretation of the songs' sources is as follows, but I'll happily stand to be corrected if anyone knows otherwise:
CD 1, tracks 1,4,9 & 10 from Riverside Church Jul 1961. CD1, tracks 2, 6, 8, 11, 14 & 16 and CD 2, tracks 1,3,4,7 & 8 from Cynthia Gooding Radio Show, Mar 1962. CD1, tracks 3,5,7,12,13,17 & 19 from Studs Terkel Radio Show Apr 1963. CD1, tracks 15 & 18 and CD2, tracks 2 & 9 from Oscar Brand Folk Festival Oct 1961. CD1, track 20, CD2 track 5 and CD3, track 15 from Les Crane TV Show Feb 1965. CD2, track 6 from Steve Allen TV Show 1964. CD2 tracks 10-16 from New York Gaslight Sep 1961. CD2, tracks 17-19 and CD4 tracks 1-22 from Bonny Beecher's Apartment Dec 1961 (Minnesota Hotel Tape). CD3, tracks 1-14 from Carnegie Chapter Hall Nov 1961.
These performances are all available elsewhere and the sound quality is variable as expected, but this is the most economical way to get them all. The track called 'Tell Me Baby' is more commonly known as 'Smokestack Lightning' and 'Dreamed A Dream' is 'Bob Dylan's Dream' I should take a star off for poor documentation, but I won't because of the incredibly good value of the set.

Yeah you will certainly save a few quid by buying this 4-disc boxset , instead of purchasing them individually.
So what you get is 3 discs of Studio & home recordings, one disc in front of an audience, & a TV interview, where Bob is in a great playful mood.
Highlights, "Candy Man" , "Wade in the Water"(with some great slide Guitar), "Cocaine", "Long Run" (with just harmonica) & Woody Guthrie's "Car Car".
Now the sound quality of the recording does change throughout the albums, but it's still an essential release for any Dylan fan interested in Bob's formative years.
My only slight quibble would be there're no liner notes, & because these performances are records over a relatively short period of Dylan's career, there isn't a massive amount of diversity in the songs.
So probably not to be listened in it's entirety in one sitting, but still a fascinating insight into a truly gifted & original songwriter at the beginning of his career.

This is an excellent collection of Bob Dylan's bootleg recordings at about the time of his first 2 CBS LP's. The sound quality is not always 100%, but that is not surprising given that the recordings were often made in cafes and hotel rooms. Given the importance of Bob Dylan to rock music, these recordings along with Bob Dylan and The freewheelin' Bob Dylan provide the foundations of what was to come.
This collection is excellent value.

Comprising of 76 recordings and clocking in at a couple of minutes shy of 5 hours, this boxset represents excellent value. Consisting of four CDs collecting together recordings from the Bonnie Beecher's Apartment tape, the New York Gaslight Cafe, the Carnegie Chapter Hall and various radio broadcasts, all of them have been available for years as bootlegs. This release, like many other Dylan releases over the past couple of years, is unofficial. Moreover, all of the recordings found on this boxset have been released on unofficial standalone CDs over the past 18 months. Although not part of the ongoing official Bootleg series this is still an essential purchase for Dylan fans.

Given that these recordings were made using relatively primitive equipment 50 years ago, the sound quality is at times poor and it never gets much better than occasionally very good but overall it's more than acceptable and I suppose it adds to the overall charm. Many of the songs are covers and traditional numbers but there are more than a few original Dylan compositions. Even at this early stage of his career it's clearly evident that Dylan was a rare talent and he knew it himself - his confidence and ability appears to know no bounds. Many of the radio recordings are from the Les Crane Radio Show and the spoken introductions have, for the most part, been cut. Crane's interview with Dylan (all 17:41 minutes of it) is hilarious.

Housed in a double CD jewel case with a cardboard slipcase, there is nothing in the way of sleeve notes, just a track listing. However, given the price - £2 per CD at the time of writing - it would be churlish to complain.
