Biography

Formed in Newcastle upon Tyne during 1962 and 1963 when Eric Burdon joined the Alan Price Rhythm and Blues Combo, the original line-up comprised Eric Burdon (vocals), Alan Price (organ and keyboards), Hilton Valentine (guitar), John Steel (drums), and Bryan "Chas" Chandler (bass). They were dubbed "animals" because of their wild stage act and the name stuck. The ... Read more in Amazon's The Animals Store

These recordings pop up in different guises every now and then. You can find a relative cheap copy under the title 'Raw Animals', released 2005. Sundazed released the recordings in 1994 with enhanced sound quality under the title 'In The Beginning'. I used to have a cassette with these recordings under the title 'The Animals with Sonny Boy Williamson'. It has been re-released on CD in 1988 with almost the same artwork as my cassette. The recordings were made by their then manager Giorgio Gomelsky. Gomelsky taped the group backing Sonny Boy Williamson the same evening. Both 'Raw Animals' and 'The Animals with Sonny Boy Williamson' contain Sonny Boy Williams' appearance. The CD's 'Live At The Club A-Go-Go' and 'In The Beginning' concentrate on The Animals gig only. There is some tape hiss on 'Live At The Club A-Go-Go' but that's not really a problem. I'm very glad I found this CD because this is where you can hear the real Animals. Eric Burdon growls and moans, Hilton Valentine kills his guitar, Alan Price pumps his organ and the rythm section of Chas Chandler and John Steel are a driving force. The intensity of these recordings was only repeated on a handful occassions on their studio albums.

Animals - 'Live At The Club A Go-Go' (Griffin) 10 Jan. 2005
By Mike Reed - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I think I may've done a review of this CD for a printed 'zine several years back. Either way, 'Live At The Club A Go Go' is a seven track archive recording of the band before they had any hits as it took place on December 30, 1963. Pretty much every tune is a cover, like two Chuck Berry songs, "Let It Rock" and "Almost Grown" as well as two John Lee Hooker covers "Dimples" and "Boom Boom". Then we cannot forget the Duke Ellington number "C Jam Blues" or Ellas McDaniel's "Bo Diddley". Not a bad sounding rarity that someone had apparently dug out of their closet, stash box, basement, etc. Good quality British invasion rock n' roll. Original line up is here: Eric Burden - vocals, Hilton Valentine - guitar, Chas Chandler - bass (R.I.P. - say, wasn't he the one who discovered Hendrix?), Alan Price - keyboards and John Steel - drums. A nice find.
