Product Description

Product Description

Great live recording of THE space-rock band of all time from the Canterbury Sound Festival, August 2001. The line up includes Simon House on violin and keyboards, original guitarist Huw Lloyd-Langton, not to mention the one and only Dave Brock and special guest Arthur Brown – self appointed God of Hell Fire, sings on the hit single, Silver Machine.

Also included are storming versions of the first single Hurry On Sundown, Motorway City from the Levitation album and a rarely performed Ejection from Robert Calvert’s Captain Lockheed And The Starfighters concept album. One of the best performances from the space rock legends that year!

5.0 out of 5 stars Canterbury Fayre 2001 27 Feb 2003
Format:Audio CD
I was sceptical about this one, (never too sure about live recordings) BUT...This is Hawkwind live and at their very best, a 2 disc offering of which the sound quality and performance are superb. (Silver Machine with lyrics by Arthur Brown being the exception) Featuring Dave Brock, Alan Davey, Simon House, Richard Chadwick, Keith Kniveton, and strangely not included on the inner sleeve is Huw Lloyd-Langton. A very tight sound and line-up, This was recorded at the Canterbury Sound Festival 2001. The first disc kicks off with 5th Second of Forever, Levitation, Spiral Galaxy, an amazing version of Solitary Mind Games, Angels of Death, Spirit of the Age, Magnu, Dust of Time, Motorway City, Hurry on Sundown, Assassins of Allah, disc 2 features Silver Machine, a 'poem' by Arthur Brown, Assault and Battery, Void of Golden Light, and finally Ejection. I must admit that it's refreshing not to have Master of the Universe or Brainstorm as part of this live set. This isn't just another live mish-mash of old recordings, this is Hawkwind as they should be, LIVE, even for fussy people like me, it'll be hard to beat this one, if you only buy 1 CD this year MAKE IT THIS ONE. Onward flies the bird.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Gig Captured 13 Jan 2005
Format:Audio CD
Hawkwind live and sounding mighty fine. Great sound, great band, great gig captured forever (until it is deleted and you can't get a copy). Buy now. Silver Machine with Arthur is just fine, no probs. It's strong line-up on stage and it shines through the speakers. Long live HW.

4.0 out of 5 stars Let Down in the Mix 28 Feb 2009
Format:Audio CD
Having read the other reviews of this CD I was reluctant to buy this album. The sound mix is occasionally poor, with the bass sometimes drowning out lead guitar, and keyboards on certain tracks being overpowering. Having said that, this is a first rate live album, with the band showcasing an interesting mix of older material. I thought the version of Silver Machine was pretty good, but then I've never been a fan of their only hit single. Other tracks will be familiar to all Hawkwind fans - there isn't anything new here - but what you do get is a spanking performance of some Hawkwind classics: Hurry on Sundown is pretty fine with no acoustic guitars, and Solitary Mind Games, Spiral Galaxy, Assassins of Allah and Ejection are all excellent and different versions. Arthur Brown is only mildly annoying, being limited to Silver Machine and some gobbledigook that lasts 20 seconds or so. In all, if it weren't for the slightly dodgy sound production I would rate this as one of their best live albums, right up there with Live 79 and Space Ritual. As it is, this is still a must for fans, and not a bad introduction for those who aren't.

3.0 out of 5 stars oh dear! 24 Feb 2009

Why??? Hawkwind have done some great live albums recorded with second to none sound quality. Check out 'The Business Trip' as well as the others mentioned in the reviews. At times instruments sound too distant or quiet. I also had to check on my Winamp player that it was playing a 'stereo' recording as at times it sounds mono. Hugh's guitaring sounds terrible at points. Had he been to the pub beforehand again lol. This all sounds below par both in performance and recording. Under rehearsed even. I've been to many a gig of theirs and never been dissapointed with the sound production. This is like going back in time to one of their more earlier poorer sound production live albums.

Although its been out for around 7 years I've only just bought this CD. Mainly because I wanted it in my collection before it vanished into deletion. If you want to do the same and have a hole filled in your Hawkwind collection for early 2000's then go for it. If you are expecting professionalism in sound reproduction and performance, then I would have to tell you to purchase Nik Turners Space Ritual music DVD called Satiricon instead.

3.0 out of 5 stars good preformance...awful production 15 Jun 2005
Format:Audio CD
well i was looking forward to this. but i'm afraid the production lets it down big time. out of the sellophane and first track on the hifi was motorway city. starts off with synths then the opening riffs...then the vocals come in....dave brock sounds like he has his head down the bog. as for the lead guitar riff....me thinks this is played well up the M2. rochester maybe? the rest is pretty much the same. awful soundstage for a recording in the 21st century. hawkwind live can sound muddy at the best of times but this is a let down, especially as the track listing offers hope. as for mr brown..............don't give up the day job, watever that may be

2.0 out of 5 stars There are better Hawkwind lives albums 18 Oct 2003
Format:Audio CD
Having bought Hawkwind albums sporadically since the mid 70s I was looking forward to having an update to my collection that would bring the live show catalogue a bit more up to date . Ultimately I felt that this album was a disappointment on a few fronts . The sound recording seems honest enough but does sound a little bit under produced compared to some of their other efforts . Money is obviously tight as I thought the quality could have been better . In addition they do sound a bit dated now and I felt the set played sounded as though it was played by a band stuck in a time warp . Of course this has not always been the case which makes it even more of a disappointment . And what about the inclusion of Arthur Brown ? What is that guy on ? He absolutely murders " Silver Machine " and makes one wonder why he was included . I guarantee you will cringe when you hear it - so why was he, Mr Brock ? The only track living up to expectations was a very good rendition of " Magnu " . Quite frankly there are far better versions of these songs on other Hawkwind live albums . Check out " Palace Springs " for tremendous versions of " Lives Of Great Men/ Void Of Golden Light " , Live '79 for " Motorway City " , and the Friday Rock Show Session at the Reading Festival for blistering guitar versions of some of their best known songs . These were justifiably great live Hawkwind albums ( although I have my suspicions as to the authenticity of " Palace Springs " as a genuine live recording ) . This , I'm afraid , is not one of them . Very average .
