This is a very stripped back recording of Mary's songs live and all the better for it. In 2010 she released 'The Foundling' which didn't do as well as expect, so, narked at all the student production she re-released it as 'The Foundling Alone' with the far simpler arrangements she'd wanted. 'Live at Blue Rock' comes from the same ethos of all you really need is one singer and one guitar. You'll hear old favourites in a new way and there are a couple of new songs. If you really want to understand the benefits this this scaled back approach brings listen to 'Cigarette Machine' then listen to Fred Eaglesmith's all singing all dancing version and you'll realise all Fred has achieved is to bury his own, rich lyrics.
Buy this, it's fab and remember it's not misery music it is survivor music. There are rumours from the good lady herself about a UK tour and a new album in 2013.

Just to add my voice to the chorus of praise here: this really is a terrific album. Many of Mary Gauthier's finest songs are here in excellent, stripped down but very powerful versions and they really add something to the studio versions, which is by no means the case with a lot of live albums.

The small band are terrific and there is some quite amazing fiddle work from Tania Elizabeth. Mary Gauthier herself gives phenomenally powerful performances both on guitar and in her vocals. Blood Is Blood, for example, is quite stunning, and it amazes me that she has the emotional strength to keep giving so much of herself in performance. (And the guts to introduce and sing Karla Faye as she does in Texas, incidentally.)

I often find with live albums by artists whose music I love that, although I'm glad to have heard them and am pleased to own them, I don't play them nearly as much as the studio albums. Not with this one. It's a real gem - superb, honest performances, very well recorded. Very warmly recommended.

I have been a fan of Mary Gauthier for some time now and when she appeared at the Nantwich words and music festival in October it was an unmissable opportunity: a world famous master of southern American folk/blues/rock performing solo in a venue the size of a secondary school assembly hall (if you went to Malbank school in Nantwich that's exactly the size of the venue).

What a sublime experience: a couple of paces away from a wonderful musician right at the top of her game. And what a terrific performance it was; by turns bitter, rancorous, angry (and occasionally even tender): painful to watch never mind experience... the 100 odd people present were extremely fortunate to witness such a special performance in a tiny intimate room where she seemed to be speaking to you individually.

Well the point of this reminiscence is that after the concert I bought this live CD from the hand of the lady herself - she even signed it for me. This CD isn't as good as the concert I witnessed: it's not quite as raw but it is still a 5 star album that you can't afford to be without: buy the studio albums as well but you'll end up loving this even more.

Do yourself a favour you won't regret it - oh and don't worry that "Mercy now" doesn't appear on the track listing - it's a bonus track tacked onto the end.

The song writing of 'Mary Go-Shay' is really, really strong - all her studio albums apart from possibly her debut 'dixie kitchen' are superb; especially 'Filth & Fire'.
The sound on this recording is intimate and she isn't trying to reproduce 'carbon copies' of the studio versions - it is the differences that will make this album interesting to listen to in the long term.
The track listing isn't particularly 'predictable' and it covers a wide range of her material.
I thoroughly recommend this album, although you might want to start with the studio versions first...., however I do suggest that in time you collect them all anyway.

Since discovering Mary's superb Drag Queens album many years ago I have been a firm fan, obtaining all of her studio recordings. I have seen her live on four occasions both with a backing band and solo and she has always been outstanding. I had avoided buying this live album for the simple reason that apart from two new songs (Both covers), I had what was on offer and as her material is generally acoustic based I did not expect to hear anything different from the studio versions. Wrong! Her treatment of her back catalogue here is similar to Dylan's live renditions of his songs. Different, sometimes inspired and sometimes not, but certainly interesting. The sound quality throughout is superb and even though it is a live recording the audience is muted, only being heard at the end of a song or in appreciation of a performed solo (How it should be). Do I like her treatment of some of these songs? The jury is out at present. As I am so used to the studio versions some may take a little getting used to. She plays around with the phrasing in most songs and I do not feel it always works but I must admit after repeated listening this is beginning to grow on me. The absolute highlight of the album is the closing song Wheel Inside The Wheel plus the bonus hidden song Mercy Now. However the entire play list is excellent in its choice but then so is most of her back catalogue. Of the two covers I love 'The Rocket' particularly as I enjoyed her introduction to it when I last saw her live at The Flowerfield Arts Centre in Portstewart mid 2013, and it tells a very poignant tale. It was only after obtaining this album that I realized that this was a cover as is 'Cigarette Machine'. Her treatment and approach to both would have you believe both were her own compositions.Read more ›
