The main problem with this release is that while the cd and DVD both contain music played live by the band, neither feature music played live in a concert environment. In fact, the footage was recorded for a German television programme without the presence of an audience. The result of this is that somehow, however well played and performed the music may be, this DVD lacks a soul and with no cheering or clapping to accompany the performances it all falls a bit flat. As the interesting booklet tells us, Black Widow's original (and highly controversial) stage act includes a number of authentic black magic spells, chants, names and rituals... All the more of a shame then that no crowd of screaming, excited fans are present for the bands performance to 'weave it's magic' upon. The footage itself is quite good quality but is virtually black and white (apart from 70's style picture blurring, colour changing effects etc) and the sound excellent, what's missing is the atmosphere. So then, if you've always been a fan, I wouldn't put you off this but if (like me) you were hoping to finally witness the 'legendary Black Widow stage show' you might be a bit disappointed with this.

As the only live cd of this band, this is a must for the Black widow fan. watching the dvd you can see that altough the audience hadnt arrived yet, the band really get into the playing. The feel is definately live, better than a BBC session recording. All the band play very well and there is some additional improvisation that is missing from the studio recordings. The dvd is good too. When I read that it was black and white, I expected some fuzzy TV style programme, but far from that, it is crisp and clean and the effects do not detract from the band. The camera angles are good and not at all clunky like some of these old recordings can be, the director obviously knew who played what when deciding on which camera to use. It is great to see the whole band playing and the concert never gets boring ( well the long sacrifice track maybe a little). Highly recommended, the cd is great quality sound and the dvd very interesting. If you liked sacrifice by the band then you need this live version and the revisited version with the demoes.

Black Widow combo 12 Mar. 2009
By George Bitetto - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Poor Black Widow never got a fair chance really.Their label had no confidence in them and their road crew left them for Black Sabbath back in 1970.The magical powers of BW endured and 40 years later they are finally getting a modicum of respect from fans who weren't even born when these albums came out.
The DVD is shot in a psychedelic blue sepia tone that adds to the allure and mystery of the set.The CD is wonderful,(worth it for Geoff Griffith's bass tone alone!!),and has some of the songs arranged a little differently,(Attack of the Demon!).
The combo pack is a must have for any true Black Widow fan and even moreso for anyone who is interested in Occult rock and where it started,(along with COVEN).Come to the SABBAT!!!

Black Widow - 'Demons Of The Night Gather To See, Live' (Mystic) 4 1/2 stars 20 Sept. 2008
By Mike Reed - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Another rarity I never thought of having a chance to see getting a proper release. CD + DVD both features the same show - a 1970 TV German Beat Club show of UK progressive / doom rockers Black Widow performing their entire 'Sacrifice' album on stage. Reason I'm giving it a 4 1/2 rating rather than five is because the gig was (reportedly) filmed in black & white, however the editor of this DVD added a blue tint through out the seven song performance. Picture quality is very good, gets fuzzy now again but just for a few seconds. Sound quality is great. Tunes here I enjoyed the most were the awesome "Way To Power", "Come To The Sabbat" (stunning flute work), the King Crimson-like "Conjuration", "Attack Of The Demon" and the fifteen-minute "Sacrifice" where front man Kip Trevor romances, dances with, strips naked and puts a dagger into the sacrificial virgin {?}. CD is nice to put in your regular CD player, boom box, car stereo, etc. as duration is 56 minutes. So, you get an extra twelve minutes of music here that isn't on the original lp. Mostly different arrangements, extended solos, etc. Line-up: Kip Trevor-vocals, Jim Gannon-guitar & vocals, Geoff Griffith- bass, Zoot Taylor-keyboards, Clive Jones-flute & sax, Clive Box-drums and female dancer-Astaroth. An absolute must-have.
