Biography

Only a handful of entertainers have ever commanded such depth of artistry in every medium. Fewer still have been rewarded with Broadway's coveted Tony Award (Best Featured Actress in a Musical - The Wiz), nominated for the London theater's West End equivalent, the Laurence Oliver Award (Best Actress in a Musical - Lady Day), won two Grammy® Awards (1998's Best Jazz Vocal ... The artwork on this package gives everything away. Photographs of Dee Dee in action capture in still the frothing exuberance of her performance. This is one gig that I am sorry to have missed. The highlight of the disc is a 14 minute long rendition of Cole Porter's "Love for Sale". They take Herbie Hancock's "Chamelion" as their starting point, tantalising the audience with a three minute introduction, during which Dee Dee can be heard to disgrace herself with a bit of role playing as the song's narrator! The announcement "You'll understand what that was all about when I start singing this next song!" is followed by a wonderfuly charismatic delivery. To hear the trio negotiating their way through the harmony of Porter's standard, whilst remaining faithful to the Hancock groove is awe-inspiring! I think the producers have made the right choice in retaining Dee Dee's banter. It makes the album less than ideal for putting on in the background, say in a restaurant, but this is to the albums favour: it trully deserves to be listened to and savoured.

This is a fierce, swinging, witty and hot jazz gig, the essence of live vocal interpretations. I'm a big fan of Dee Dee's jazz recordings and this one (as well as Live in Paris ) is on of my favorites (although Keeping Tradition (Reis)) is also quite intriguing...

Her scatting is definitively influenced by Ella, but she is individual, original, witty and at times menacing (in erotic sense)... There's a growl in her otherwise virtuosic and precisely pitched voice that simply grew on me.

Divine! 19 Feb. 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is an inspired album. Many of the tracks of this live CD appeared in studio form on Ms. Bridgewater's DEAR ELLA CD. Dee Dee does not try to immitate Ella Fitzgerald but she certainly brings Ella's warmth and grace to this great live recording. You really do feel that you're at Yoshi's as Dee Dee and her wonderful band work the room. This is a great album for fans and newcomers alike. It really showcases Dee Dee's command of scat-singing.

I've died and gone to Jazz Heaven 26 Oct. 2000
By L Ken - Published on Amazon.com

Jazz afficionados and friends everywhere: If you like brisk jazz, scat, energy, pep, zeal, passion, soul, and emotion all tied up into a single sound this is the CD for you. I am a Jazz junkie; if anything out there comes even close to the ability and expression of Dee Dee on this album I would be shocked. Hook me up to this CD and let me be.
Dee Dee's expression and ability to entertain only adds to her well-seasoned ability to vocalize. The standards are reborn in the arrangements. You have absolutely got to hear Love for Sale. She has so much fun doing what she does, it's hard to imagine hearing anyone sing in a studio while being this expressive. Her band should be made saints; talent on top of talent on top of talent.
TRUST ME!! YOU CANNOT GO WRONG WITH THIS CD

A joy. 9 July 2001
By J. J Lima - Published on Amazon.com

Dee Dee is great and there is no doubt about that. My first point is to tell you to see this woman live. You will so impressed you will talk about it for days. As for this album? Dee Dee is known as much for her voice as for her stage presence. She is a top notch, extremely intelligent performer. She has sass a wit for days. This is one jazz album that even your friends who are not into jazz will appreciate. Buy Buy Buy.

Better than Sushi 15 Feb. 2000
By Paul Ferrigno - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I first heard this album while driving northwards, at night, through the heart of France. Bridgewater's voice made the car float over the blacktop. She's rich, she's full of power, she's fresh AND traditional and above all she's FUN! If you want to vibrate from your soles to your soul, this is the album you've been waiting for.

DEE DEE IS AWESOME! 3 May 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com

This is the first time I have heard Dee Dee Bridgewater. Her voice has soul. Listening to just one song will not tell you just how talented she really is. She is the best jazz singer today that I've heard so far.
