Apologies for the obvious pun but this album really is worth it.

Lloyd Cole and The Commotions were, for only a few years unfortunately, the thinking man's (and woman's) Smiths. Dismissed as overly pretentious by many, Lloyd Cole was willing to show that he was an educated man with his clever lyrics, name checking many books and films that he had read or seen. I am a huge Smiths fan, but Lloyd and his band have a special place in my heart.

I am a completist so had to buy this album (along with LC and The Commmotions Vol. 1 and LC at the BBC) as I had listened all those years ago to the radio when these tracks were first broadcast, but a dodgy C90 casette (for those who don't know what one of these is - count yourselves lucky!) does not give the band the justice they deserve.

As Amazon have failed to include the tracklisting here it is:

Disc 1

Brand New Friend
James
Grace
Speedboat
Perfect Blue
Charlotte Street
James
Brand New Friend

Disc 2

Rich
Lost Weekend
Old Hats
Pretty Gone
Mr Malcontent
Brand New Friend
Perfect Blue
Cut Me Down
Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken?
Speedboat
Forest Fire
Grace
Rattlesnakes
Perfect Skin
Mystery Train

Stand out tracks are Forest Fire, Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken?, and for me James.

The band sound great, both in the radio studio and live (Disc 1 is studio, Disc 2 is live) and the whole thing is quite polished. I can heartily recommend this album, together with the others, for the fan, the completist and the newcomer these are great, but you newcomers should also buy 'Rattlesnakes' - one of the greatest albums of all time in my opinion. Buy it.

Great two CD release.

Saw Lloyd two months ago and he's still got it!

Could have been great but a mess ! (see star breakdown below) 1 April 2010

OK, so I'm a Lloyd Cole fan and most all of these songs are from his excellent first two albums with the Commotions - in that you can't go wrong.

However, some of these songs are live in front of a crowd and some are 'live' in a studio with no audience at all and it makes for a bit of an odd mix. Added to that is the repetition of several songs and this seems like an odd package.
Some of the performances are really good, and it's fun having some different takes, but eventually I ended up buying Live at the BBC, Vol. 1 as well and putting contents from the three CD's together to cut myself a real live set which amounts to about one CD. I think that the producers or marketers were supposed to do that, not put out this jumble.
So music = ***** format = ** average about three stars
