I was 18 when i first heard the sweet melodic harmonie's of ruby turner. that was 22 years ago! 'women hold up half the sky' was probably the pivotal album, released in 1986 the album title lends itself from the old chinese proverb that promotes equality between the genders.A few tracks from that album are on this one such as 'i'd rather go blind' originally sung my the great Etta james. She is an absolute delight to listen to.She Puts her heart and soul into every song and literally takes on a journey of moods and emotions. This woman sings from the heart and from experience. Everyone can relate to at least one of her songs. But 'stay with me baby' really exposes how vulnerable and lonely we all can be at times in our lives and how we also can conquer those times when we're feeling we can't go on. The beauty of ruby is that she sings with such soul, that even when singing about a sad event or feeling you feel utterly uplifted and sated. That said there are some great catchy tunes on here. 'If you're ready is a real upbeat ditty that will brighten the darkest of days.A beautiful sound from a beautiful soul.

Firstly, this is a double album, they are both live recordings and very similar in content. One is at Ronnie Scott's and the other is at the MAC.
Ruby has been around now for nearly 30 years. She is of course well established and probably the best voice to ever have come out of Jamaica. She is better known for her live performances than for her chart success. She has had some moderate chart success here with her singles but never really got near a hit with her albums, which is perhaps somewhat surprising. Several of her singles are on this cd.
There's no doubt in my mind that the real driving force behind Ruby's music is gospel, so many of her songs stretch out well beyond the normal 3 to 4 minute range. They grow as they go, building into a crescendo, rather like a lot of the gospel choirs tend to do with their songs.
What a voice this woman has but live on stage she is an absolute show - stopper, as her regular touring with Jools Holland showcases. I've seen her several times with Jools and she is always the stand out performer. No wonder that she has now become a permanent addition to the band.
She so deserves a big chart album.

I love Ruby Turner and heartily recommend her concerts. This set captures her soul and energy in a way that many of her studio recordings do not. Not only great singing but terrific playing as well. Only slight down side is that some of the tracks are perhaps too long. Not a problem at the actual concert but for me in this medium we could have had an extra song.

What can you say about Ruby Turner's music? She is always great. I went to see her at Ronnie Scotts and had to get the CD as a memento. I have no idea why we do not see her on TV more often (other than on Jules Holland), why she does not have more recognition for what she does or why she has not yet been chose to sing a Bond theme tune. She is one of the UK's finest singers.

Excellent album and being live makes it all the more better. I have listened to this album a lot. Buy it if you like soulful music.
