Biography

Yusef Lateef (b. 1920), a multi-instrumentalist who is equally skilled on tenor saxophone, flute, and oboe, is also a multiculturalist whose musical interests have long gone beyond jazz, a word he disdains. An innovator in mixing world music influences into jazz, Lateef is in his own musical category.

Originally an altoist, Lateef switched to tenor while in high school. He worked early ... Read more in Amazon's Yusef Lateef Store

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful By Jazzrook TOP 500 REVIEWER on 18 Mar. 2013
Format: Audio CD
The multi-instrumentalist Yusef Lateef(1920-2013) was recorded live at Pep's Lounge in Philadelphia on June 29, 1964 with a superb quintet including Lateef(tenor saxophone, flute, oboe, argol, tambourine); Richard Williams(trumpet); Mike Nock(piano); Ernie Farrow(bass) & James Black(drums).
The nine memorable tracks feature six Lateef originals, one from James Black and compositions by Benny Golson & Victor Young. Highlights include Lateef's 'Nu-Bouk' featuring his earthy flute, the beautiful tenor ballad 'I Love' and Benny Golson's 'I Remember Clifford' which is a vehicle for Richard Williams.
'Live at pep's Volume Two' is an enjoyable and varied album which displays Yusef Lateef's wide-ranging musical talents.

the best jazz flutist we have! 22 Nov. 1999
By Albert Wang - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
lateef is the best jazz flutist. we hardly get any in the field but I believe that his rawness and constant beauty of thick melody is quite impressive anyways. I presume that you can't go wrong without buying this album for the year.
I would like to recommend this for those who want to experiment with raw cool jazz styles!

This has always been one of my favorite Lateef albums. It was recorded in Philadelphia. The original album had a picture of the bar on South St. but the music is the same.
